이중모음(二重母音) ‘ㅢ’의 통시적 변화 = A Study on Diachronic Change on Vowel ‘ㅢ’ in Korean

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본고는 국어의 二重母音 ‘ㅢ’의 音聲的 성격을 通時的 관점에서 기술하고 아울러 音素로서의 地位가 어떻게 변화해 왔는지를 검토하였다. 먼저 중세국어 諸 文獻(『朝鮮館譯語』, 『鄕藥救急方』, 『訓民正音』 解例本 등)을 통하여 ‘ㅢ’가 당시의 언중들에게 二重母音으로 분명하게 인식되고 있었음을 알 수 있었다. 한편 현대방언에서는 ‘ㅢ’가 주로 단모음인 [i], [i], [e] 등으로 실현되고 있으나, 이중모음인 [ij]도 분명하게 쓰이고 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. 또한 音韻論的인 解釋의 문제를 언급하면서 몇 가지 이유로 ‘ㅢ’를 下向二重母音으로 볼 것을 주장하였고, ‘ㅢ’ 표기의 변화 양상을 검토하면서 이러한 異表記가 音節 副音의 流動性과 깊은 관련성이 있는 것으로 추정하였다. 마지막으로 ‘ㅢ’의 單母音化와 관련된 기존 견해에 대한 문제점을 지적하고, ‘ㅢ’의 音聲的인 不安定性이 音聲的 資質 이외에도 體系上의 관점에서 설명될 수 있음을 언급하였다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The purpose of this paper is to study diachronically the changing process of diphthong ‘ㅢ’ in Korean and to interpret this process and all aspects involved in this process from the phonological perspective. I put an interest on the following branch sides and performed an argument. First, I define phonological properties of falling diphthongs ‘ㅢ’(j) at the time of the establishment of Hunmin-Jeongeum(訓民正音) and describe the diachronical changes of the ‘ㅢ’ from that time through the Modern Korean period. Next, through the changes and phonological phenomena involved in the changes, I investigate the relation between the diphthong ‘ㅢ’ and the other falling diphthongs in the phonological system of the 15th century Korean. And, I present the influence of monophthongization of the falling diphthongs on changes of Korean vowel system and find out when these falling diphthongs began to be monophthongized and what was the motivation for this, in connection with the changes in vowel system. Finally, I indicated a problem about an existing opinion related to monophthongization of the ‘ㅢ’, and the instability that was of the ‘ㅢ’ mentioned that it can be described in a viewpoint on phonological system besides phonetic features.
