친족에서 정적까지 ― 『시경(詩經)』 ‘붕우(朋友)’의 성격 = From Kin to Foe: The Meaning of ‘pengyou’ in Shijing

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본고는 시경의 ‘朋友’ 관련 표현이 본래 동족 친척의 뜻이었음을 밝히고, 작품별 쓰임새를 분석하여 당시 군자 계층의 사회 구조를 설명하기 위해 작성되었다. 서주에서 춘추시대 초기에 이르기까지 문헌의 용례를 보면 붕우는 귀족의 일가 친족이라는 뜻으로 쓰였다. 붕우는 형제, 자손, 인척 등과 병칭되어 맥락에 따라 형제와 친척을 포괄한다.
시경에서 붕우 관련 칭호는 제례, 혼례, 군사 및 정치 갈등을 주제로 한 시에 쓰인다. 주대에 제사는 조상이 같은 후손들이 모여 복을 비는 의례였으므로 임금과 신하 간에도 종법 질서가 적용되었다. 따라서 붕우는 종실의 일족으로 보는 것이 더 정확하다. 제사를 마친 뒤에는 으레 연회가 벌어졌고, 이는 종족 구성원이 우의로써 화합하는 자리였다. 주대의 봉건제는 친족을 각지에 제후로 봉함으로써 왕실에 대한 군사적 위협을 막아내는 것이 주된 기능 중 하나였다. 험윤의 침입을 막아낸 공적을 칭송한 시에서 붕우를 대접하는 내용은 바로 왕실을 구해낸 친족을 위로한 것이다. 붕우는 혈연적으로 같은 종실의 친족이었지만, 정치적으로는 같은 임금을 모시는 동료 신하이기도 했다. 시경에는 우의가 두터워야 할 친족이 자신에게 일을 떠넘기며 심지어 모함하여 해치려 드는 세태를 원망하는 내용이 자주 등장한다. 여러 작품에서 같은 시상 전개를 보이고 있는 점을 감안하면 붕우는 이미 뜻을 함께하는 동료가 아니라 시의 화자를 해치는 정적임을 알 수 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper was written to explain the social structure of the noble class in Zhou dynasty by revealing that the expression related to ‘朋友’ in the poems originally meant relatives of the same clan. From the Western Zhou to the early Spring and Autumn Period, bronze inscriptions and traditional texts such as Zuo Tradition show the usage of ‘pengyou’ as the meaning of a family relative of a nobleman. ‘Pengyou’ included brothers and relatives according to the context of the text.
In Shijing, ‘pengyou’ was used in poems about ancestral rites, weddings, military and political conflicts. In Zhou period, ancestral rites were a ceremony for descendants of the same ancestor to gather to pray for blessings, so the clan rules were applied between the king and his subjects. Therefore, it is more accurate to see ‘pengyou’ as a clan of the royal family rather than a servant of the court. After the ritual, a banquet was usually held, and it was a place where the members of the family united through bonding. One of the main functions of the Zhou feudal system was to block military threats to the royal family by enclosing relatives as princes in various states. ‘Pengyou’ was a relative of the same clan, but politically, he was also a fellow subject of the same king. In Shijing, there are often stories of a relative who should have a strong friendship, but trying to shift the responsibility and even trying to harm the speaker of the poem by slander. It can be seen that ‘pengyou’ is not a colleague who shares the same pursuit, but an enemy that harms the speaker of the poem.
