This study examines readers’ practices of micro-reading based on Deleuze and Guattari’s discussion of “micropolitics and segmentarity.” A segment, understood as a piece or part broken from a larger object, possesses internal properties that define its opposition to other segments. Politics, in this framework, is the process of coordinating and integrating such oppositions. Deleuze and Guattari distinguish segmentarity into essential forms and actual types, further categorized into binary segmentation, circular segmentation, and linear segmentation. Binary segmentation refers to two segments in opposition. Circular segmentation describes disk-shaped segments that expand outward from a central point. Linear segmentation, by contrast, arises from segments within a linearly changing structure. These segmentation types are subdivided into essential forms and actual types. The practical types of segmentation are further divided into flexibility and solidity, molar and molecularity, and code and territoriality. Flexibility and solidity concern the nature of oppositions between fragments in primitive and modern societies. Molar and molecularity subdivide addresses oppositional characteristics between fragments in macropolitics and micropolitics. Code and territoriality subdivide concerns oppositions between fragments in processes of overcoding and reterritorialization, as well as decoding and deterritorialization, depending on how encoding functions. Together, these essential forms and practical types of segmentation enable range of fragmentation practices. The act of a reader understanding a text transforms it into a specific segment. In this process, the reader simultaneously becomes a new segment, constructing a self with internal properties distinct from the previous one. Because the reader’s transformation into a new segment is a personal process, it is connected to micropolitics. Each act of microscopic reading involves the reader becoming a segment through the act of understanding of a text. With every reading, new segments are created through the complementary interaction of forms and types of segmentation.
