This essay begins with a question regarding contradictory accounts of the ‘abdication’ (禪讓), one of ancient China's methods of power transition. While Confucians extol it as the embodiment of ‘rule by virtue’ (德治), Legalists like Han Feizi dismiss it as an unrealistic claim that merely glorifies violent usurpation. Specifically, it focuses on the Zhuangzi, which contains the most narratives related to abdication, particularly the unique narratives of the ‘refusers of kingship’ like Xu You, aiming to reinterpret their philosophical and political-ideological implications.
This paper proposes that the ‘refusers of kingship’ appearing in the Zhuangzi should be understood, contrary to their traditional interpretation as recluses fleeing the world, as subjects resisting state power, despotism, and war through their act of refusal. They fundamentally criticize the bureaucratic, authoritarian rule justified under the banner of ‘benevolence and righteousness’ (仁義) and the system of ‘utilizing the people’ (用民) that treats the populace as objects of mobilization. As exemplified by the case of Shan Juan, the ‘Rejectors of the Throne’ demonstrate that the category of individual self-cultivation is being expanded into a political subject by choosing a life of wandering in the ‘cosmos’ (宇宙)—the world of life and territory of freedom—rather than the ‘under Heaven’ (天下), the territory of the king.
Furthermore, this paper critically examines the interpretation presented by Sarah Allan in her structuralist analysis of the Xuan Yang myth, which views the throne-refusers as functional beings mediating the contradiction between blood ties and virtue. Contrary to Allan's interpretation, this study argues that the protagonists of these narratives, shared within the textual tradition of the Zhuangzi, embody an active political-philosophical demand: the freedom to refuse. In conclusion, the narratives of throne-refusers in the Zhuangzi should be reevaluated as a philosophy of resistance—one that constitutes disobedience to authoritarian rule and embodies the imagination of a new society and political freedom as its essence.
