<Abstract>Learning to play musical instruments differs from other music learnings in
several aspects. The purpose of this paper is to examine the unique characteristics
of musical instrument learning, and therby to explore ways to make the learning
process more effective and to enhance general musical abilities. The topics include
aqutring musical motor skills, developing musical reading skill, and maintaining
learning motivation.The process of aqutring musical motor skills are divided into three stages, i. e.,
awareness' stage, practice stage, and automatization stage. The contents which
need to be mastered in each stage are pointed out. Also the teacher's diagnostic
abilities related to acqiring musical motor skills are categorized and explained.Regarding musical reading skill, the characteristics and difficulty inherent in
musical reading are explained. Learning musical reading skill is a conceptual
learning. The general process of conceptual learning is explored, and applied to the
acquisition of musical reading skill. Characteristics of learning musical reading skill
is compared with those of musical motor skills to understand the opposite mental
functions involved in each skill.Other factor critical to learning musical instrument is to maintain high learning
motivation for a long time. Learning motivation theories are reviewed and applied
to learning musical instruments.The traditional method in learning basic musical playing skills heavily relied on
constant repetitions without much feedback and conscious thinking process on both
teacher and student parts. The issues related to learning musical instruments should
be re-examined, and a teaching and learning method needs to be changed for the
sake of shortening learning time and increasing general musical growth of students.

Learning to play musical instruments differs from other music learnings in several aspects. The purpose of this paper is to examine the unique characteristics of musical instrument learning, and therby to explore ways to make the learning process more effective and to enhance general musical abilities. The topics include aquiring musical motor skills, developing musical reading skill, and maintaining learning motivation.
The process of aquiring musical motor skills are divided into three stages, i. e., awareness stage, practice stage, and automatization stage.
