This study explores the scientific concepts and Nature of Science (NOS) perceptions that pre-service science teachers reveal through a photo-based writing task. A two-tier analytical framework was developed: Tier 1 categorised scientific concepts and NOS dimensions, while Tier 2 classified NOS perception levels— conceptual understanding, contextual reasoning, and value judgement. The task was then administered to 13 pre-service science teachers, and their responses were qualitatively analyzed. The findings are as follows. First, participants demonstrated a rich repertoire of scientific concepts related to climate change, yet the sophistication of their understanding varied. Their NOS perceptions clustered into three types: comprehensive, epistemology-focused, and fragmentary. Second, the interactions among scientific concepts, NOS scope, and NOS levels produced three composite patterns—knowledge–application balance, knowledge–application imbalance, and transitional state. Based on these findings, it is suggested that new criteria are needed to diagnose and evaluate NOS perceptions beyond simple knowledge checks, and that tailored instruction should be provided according to the current levels of pre-service science teachers. Specifically, the knowledge–application imbalance type should be supported through integrated SSI lessons connected with moral and social studies, while the knowledge–application transitional type should be supported by providing explicit and reflective foundations to strengthen NOS concepts. In addition, the photo-based writing developed in this study is suggested to be used not only as an assessment tool but also as an effective instructional resource.
