There are four parts to this essay. In the first part, I present a brief account of the origin and contemporary trends of religious studies, especially the sheer pluralism of subject and method that is prevailing in the field. I go on to discuss, in the second part, what religious studies and particular religions can learn from each other. I here point out that particular religions can help religious studies appreciate religion as a concrete historical totality and prevent it from falling into essentialism, while the self-critical and comparative insights of religious studies can help a particular religion both deepen its appreciation of its own tradition and expand its horizon beyond the traditional. In the third part, I present globalization as the context of all contexts today and outline some of its challenges to humanity, especially to human dignity we all share and to human solidarity across the usual boundaries of identity that we so need in the common struggle for justice and liberation. In the fourth and main part I address the issues and challenges globalization raises to both religious studies and particular religions, especially how both can contribute to expanding our tribal sympathies to include a sense of solidarity with those who are different from us and to negotiating the delicate territory between the unconditional commitment to truth that the true religious spirit seems to require and the mutual tolerance of one another that we so need today.
