This study is performed for an article in an academic seminar discussed about what are the requests for Korean Language Education nowadays. Hereby, I surveyed teachings and researches in the reading comprehension and abstracted requests needed to research for the teaching reading in two directions. One is that it is needed to research to support the teaching reading in classrooms now, and the other is that it is needed to research to recognize and prepare the future teaching reading. For the ``here and now`` of the teaching reading, we have two research tasks ; how can we support the teaching reading ``comprehension`` and ``thinking`` and how can we let students read books as possible as many and valuable. For the first one, we should study about topics concerned in texts(the structures, the functions, the expressions, and so on), readers(knowledges, skills, attitudes, reading processes, developments, and so on), and contexts(reading circumstances, social cultural backgrounds, and so on). For the second one, we need to develop several kinds of reading programs. For the development of the programs, we should search many informations about books(readabilities, themes, genres, and so on) and readers(motives, goals, inclinations, and so on), and research the relations between reading circumstances and reading absorption. For the future of the teaching reading, we should know what are the trends of reading or literacy. I abstracted the trends to be three directions : texts are increasing to be composed of factors of multimedia, readers are becoming not only consumer but also producer of informations, reading acts are changing to social acts. So we need to research the influences of new trends to the reading and the teaching. And we should attend the change of reading paradigm. Nowadays, educators and cultural analysts all emphasize to read not affirmatively but critically, so the focus on reading is not in messages but ideas, and not in comprehensions but in creative thinkings. As a result, we still need to research this tasks with scientistic minds and methods instead of interpretational minds. Because we know just few principles of reading phenomenon, and most of education plans is based on not principles but experiences. I hope that there will be more interests of researchers.
