This is the study of "Standardizing Picture-frustration Test" for use with Korean children. The main purpose of this study is to develop the Picture-frustration Test by means of the measurement of personality. It has been stimulated by "The Picture-frustration Study" which had been developed by Dr. Saul Rosenzweig has been obtained a considerable achievement in the field of projective techniques.
The Picture-frustration Test for assessing reactions to frustration is a limited projective device that is fully described elsewhere. The procedure attempts to evaluate typical modes of response in everyday situations of stress by allowing the individual to identify with and respond to anonymous figures in appropriate cartoon-like drawings.
This form of the study is intended for use with children from age 5 through 14.
The procedure of this study may be reviewed as follow:
1) A open questionnaire had been given to the children in order to collect data their frustrations and select appropriate items among them. 48 items were selected.
2) First, try-out for reassuring, characterizing, and analyzing each item statistically was done.
It has been applied 819 subjects (male:403, female:416, age level 5 to 12).
The results of analysis are:
1) In the direction of aggression to the above frustrated situations, Korean children show generally a tendency of extrapunitiveness.
2) As to type of response to the above frustrated situations, "Ego-Defense" has taken in the first place, and "Need-Persistent", and " Obstacle-Dominance" have followed in that order.
3) It does not show high a correlation coefficient among the factors of either the type of response or the direction of response.
4) Considering modality, group conformity, and variability of response distribution, it is possible select 35 items among 48 as the Second Try-Out Test Form.
This study is not quite satisfactory one, because of the uneven distribution of the groups has been analysed. It seems, however, to be the general idea of the critiques that the results of the test are fairly good.
It is, as soon as possible, my plan to standardize this Picture-Frustration Test.
