As is generally known, more than 20 pieces of glassware were found in the ancient tombs of Silla. The academic circle mostly agrees with an opinion that Silla glassware was produced and imported from the Western region. It is assumed that Syria and Palestine were the places of production, and a Steppe route is considered as a reliable route of acceptance. However, from the situations of the glassware recently excavated in China, it is judged that it is necessary to consider the place of production and the place of acceptance of Silla glassware in different ways. An opinion that the route of export of glass excavated in the Hubei province and Jiangsu province, which were the areas of Southern dynasty was a maritime route is suggested by Chinese scholars. Thus, this study attempts to help find the route of acceptance of Western glassware in Silla by analyzing the process of the distribution of the Western glassware, of which the aspects of use are the most complicated, excavated in Northern Yan, Northern Wei and Northern Zhou in Northern Dynasty during the period of Wei, Jin and Northern and Southern Dynasties.
As a route of the circulation of the Western glassware found in ancient tombs in the Northern dynasty, first, there is a sea route. The courses from Rome, South India and the Strait of Malacca, Indonesia to Thailand, Vietnam and South China were steadily used from the Han dynasty through to the period of Wei, Jin and Northern and Southern Dynasties. It is assumed that four pieces of the glassware excavated from the Feng Sufu’s Tomb of Northern Yan in the early 5th century are Roman glass and three of them, excluding duck-shaped glass container were introduced through a sea route. Concerning this, it is noted that there was a situation in which a lot of Roman glassware was excavated from the tombs of the aristocratic class of Dongjin located in the Jiangsu province in the 4th century. It is suggested that these three pieces of Roman glass in the Feng Sufu’s Tomb might be introduced first through Nanzhao and then circulated in Northern Yan. In contrast, it was noted that duck-shaped water containers were introduced, as compared to the water containers of Begram, Afghanistan, through a steppe route. It was judged that net pattern glass cups in the tomb of Feng Monu, who died in the seventh year of Taihe in Northern Wei(483), which was moved to Pingcheng in the second year of Zhengguang(521), were, also, introduced through a steppe route.
It was noted that cut pattern glass bowls of Tomb No. M107, Datong, Shanxi, Northern Wei and high relief cut glass bowls of Lee Xian’s Tomb in Nanjiao District, Guyuan Xian, Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region in the Northern Zhou were circulated in the Northern dynasty by Hephthalites through an oasis route. This considered Hephthalites’ activities in Datong, Northern Wei and the situation at the time when the Sassanian Persia was reduced to submission by a war.
What is noted newly is a circumstance in which Western glass was produced by Hephthalites in China. A number of glassware was found, which seems to have been produced in China in Datong, the capital of the Northern Wei at the time, including Buddha’s bowl, excavated in stone cases of the Dingzxian Tower Stylobate established by the order of Xiao Wendi in the fifth year of Taihe in Northern Wei(481).
As a result of an analysis of Western glass excavated in China, what is noted with about 20 pieces of glassware of Silla is that Western glassware excavated in Silla was not introduced to Silla through China, as compared to those of China Northern Dynasties discussed above.
Next, there is an issue of the route. The author, too, thinks that a number of Silla Roman glassware, such as cups with net pattern and cups with spotted pattern were introduced through a steppe route and a oasis route, like the existing view. It is very likely that they passed through Goguryeo as the middle course. However, it was also noted that they we...
