The question of whether we have free will if determinism is true is a very important philosophical problem in relation to legal and moral responsibility. Traditionally, philosophers have offered two answers to this question, known as “the problem of determinism and free will.” First, compatibilists argue that free will is possible even if determinism is true. On the other hand, incompatibilists argue that if determinism is true, free will is impossible. The debate between compatibilists and incompatibilists over the problem of free will in philosophy has focused on clarifying the meaning of terms like “free will”, “determinism”, and “cause”, and on the justification of determinist and libertarianist arguments. And in that sense, this debate can be seen as being handled mainly through the a priori method that has been used by traditional analytic philosophers(or armchair philosophers). Therefore, philosophers did not use empirical or experimental methods(a posteriori methods) while engaging in this debate, and the traditional trend in philosophy was to take such practices for granted.
Recently, however, so-called experimental philosophers have been using experimental methods in the social sciences, specifically surveys, to examine the debate between compatibilists and incompatibilists related to the problem of free will. By examining people’s intuitions about certain scenarios that address the problem of free will, they attempt to test whether the folk people have the intuition that in a deterministic world, agents cannot have free will and are not responsible for their actions. So they attempt to test whether people actually have compatibilist or incompatibilist intuitions. Either way, the findings of experimental philosophers may have implications for people’s perceptions of the problem of free will, especially for lay people outside of professional philosophers, and for problems of responsibility.
This paper introduces the experimental work of Namias and colleagues as an example of experimental philosophers’ approach to the “determinism and free will problem,” reviews its results, and considers its implications for the free will debate. In the process, we will contrast the features of experimental philosophers’ approach to applying empirical methods to philosophy, as opposed to traditional approaches to philosophical problems. Of course, since it only started in the early 21st century and is only about 20 years old, this attempt at experimental philosophy still has some rough and crude aspects. Nevertheless, experimental philosophy is almost ubiquitously applying experimental methods to a wide range of philosophical problems, including the Gettier problem, the intentional act problem, the reference problem, and others related to the concept of knowledge, and Namias et al.'s work on the “Determinism and Free Will Problem” can be seen as an attempt to do just that. Therefore, before introducing the work of Namias et al. this paper describes the methods of armchair philosophy traditionally used in philosophy, most notably the intuition method, which is standard practice in analytic philosophy, in order to provide an overview of the background and motivation for research in experimental philosophy. I will first briefly discuss how the empirical and experimental methods of science(a posteriori methods) relate to this intuitive method in the process of doing philosophy, and whether experimental methods can contribute to philosophy, and if so, in what ways. Then, finally, I will assess the implications of experimental philosophy for the problem of free will.

결정론이 옳을 경우에 우리에게 자유의지가 있는가 하는 문제는 법적 책임이나 도덕적 책임과 관련하여 매우 중요한 철학적 문제이다. “결정론과 자유의지 문제”로 알려진 이 문제에 대해 전통적으로 철학자들은 두 가지 답을 제시해왔다. 우선 양립가능론자(compatibilist)는 결정론이 옳더라도 자유의지가 가능하다고 주장한다. 다시 말해 결정론과 자유의지의 존재가 양립할 수 있다고 주장한다. 반면에 양립불가능론자(incompatibilist)는 결정론이 옳으면 자유의지는 불가능하다고 주장한다. 결정론과 자유의지의 존재는 양립할 수 없다는 것이다. 그 동안 철학계에서 자유의지의 문제를 둘러싸고 벌어진 양립가능론자와 양립불가능론자 사이의 이 논쟁은 주로 “자유의지”, “결정론”, “원인” 같은 용어들의 의미에 대한 명료화, 행위의 “자유로운 선택”이나 “행위자 원인” 등과 관련된 주장을 포함하여 결정론자나 자유의지론자의 주장들의 정당화 문제 등에 집중되었다. 그리고 그런 의미에서 이 논쟁은 주로 전통적인 분석철학자들(또는 안락의자 철학자들)이 사용해왔던 선천적 방법(a priori method)을 통해 다루어졌다고 볼 수 있다. 그래서 철학자들은 이 논쟁에 종사하면서 경험적이거나 실험적인 방법(후천적 방법)을 사용하지 않았고, 그러한 관행을 당연시해온 것이 그동안 전통적인 철학의 흐름이었다.
그러나 최근 이른바 실험철학자들(experimental philosophers)은 사회과학의 실험적 방법, 구체적으로 설문조사 방법을 이용해 자유의지 문제와 관련된 양립가능론자와 양립불가능론자들의 이 논쟁을 검토하고 있다. 그들은 자유의지 문제를 다루면서 어떤 시나리오들에 대한 사람들의 직관을 조사함으로써 사람들이 결정론적 세계에서 행위자가 자유의지를 가질 수 없으며, 자신의 행위에 대해 책임이 없다는 직관을 갖는지를 시험하려 한다. 그래서 그들은 자유의지와 결정론의 양립가능성에 관해 사람들이 실제로 양립가능론적 직관을 갖는지, 아니면 양립불가능론적 직관을 갖는지를 시험하려 한다. 어떤 쪽의 결과가 나오든 실험철학자들의 연구결과는 자유의지 문제에 대한 사람들의 인식, 특히 전문 철학자들 이외의 일반인의 인식에 영향을 미칠 수 있고, 나아가 책임 문제에도 영향을 미칠 수 있다.
이 논문은 “결정론과 자유의지 문제”에 대한 실험철학자들의 접근방식의 한 예시로 나미아스와 그 동료들이 전개한 실험적 연구를 소개하고, 그 연구의 결과를 검토하며, 그 연구가 자유의지 논쟁에서 갖는 의의를 음미해본다. 그 과정에서 기존의 철학적 문제들에 대한 선천적 접근방식과 달리 경험적 방법을 철학에 적용하려는 실험철학자들의 접근방식의 특징이 대비되어 드러날 것이다. 물론 겨우 21세기 초에 시작되어 불과 20여 년 정도밖에 안 되었기 때문에 이러한 실험철학의 시도는 아직 거칠고 조야한 면이 없지 않다. 그럼에도 불구하고 실험철학은 지식 개념과 관련한 게티어 문제, 의도적 행위 문제, 언급 문제 등을 포함한 다양한 철학적 문제에 대해 거의 전방위적으로 실험적 방법을 적용하고 있으며, “결정론과 자유의지 문제”에 대한 나미아스 외의 연구도 바로 그러한 시도의 일환으로 볼 수 있다. 그래서 이 논문은 나미아스 외의 연구를 소개하기 전에 실험철학 연구의 배경과 동기를 대략적으로 이해하기 위해 전통적으로 철학에서 사용해온 안락의자 철학의 방 ...
