In the liberal arts of early Western universities, “rhetoric” was a subject that taught the skills of communicating with the public and making them understand or persuade them. However, the origins of rhetoric go back to the Greek philosophers, and began with the method of rational discourse of the Sophists and Aristotle. Afterwards, rhetoric came to have two major meanings: one was considered as the “skill of language or the art of thinking” that persuades others through reason and logical dialectics, and the other was considered through emotion and passion in addition to speech. This is the ‘art of oratory’ that seeks to gain sympathy from the public. The art of oratory was an achievement of the Roman era, especially Cicero. These concepts of rhetoric have been developed through modern and contemporary times, such as 'negotiating differences between individuals regarding a given question,' 'the art of describing language,' 'the art of public discourse,' and 'the application of reason to imagination to move the will.' It even developed into an “autonomous study” with “unique epistemology.” Today, the function or role of “rhetoric” as a basic liberal arts in universities is broadly divided into three categories: “rhetoric as a function of rational liberal arts education”, “rhetoric as a philosophical education”, and “rhetoric as a basic liberal arts for democratic citizens or as performance of the function of political criticism.” In a cutting-edge technological age where people are increasingly experiencing the absence of true communication and understanding between people, these ‘rhetorical discourse and communication skills’ can be said to be very important essential knowledge.
