훈민정음 한글본 타이포그래피를 응용한 현대 의상디자인 연구 : 믹스드미디어(mixed-media)를 활용한 DTP소재를 중심으로

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Today characters have made their way into the field of design, not only delivering the primary linguistic meanings but also allowing for formative meanings. Holding and delivering human thoughts and words, characters become the object of fundamental interest among designers who want to create consensus with their works. Such interest has been manifested in the works of the world's renowned designers in recent years.
Characters are also the critical foundation upon which to build a culture. There are a good number of alphabets with different origins and shapes that reflect different cultures across the world. Hangeul especially stands out in the group being a unique alphabet based on the shapes of the organs of speech. As a matter of fact, Hangeul runs on an incredible system of creating new characters in the same phonetic family by adding strokes to the basic character(e.g. ㄱ, ㅋ, and ㄲ). Being able to write down 11,000 sounds, Hangeul is honored as the alphabet to transcribe the most pronunciations in the world. It's one superb alphabet with its simple and rational principles and contributes to Korea's lowest illiteracy rates on earth. In addition to scientific excellence in terms of linguistics, Hangeul also has unique and differentiated features attributed to the geometric shapes and simplicity from the formative perspective. Despite the wonderful invention of such a creative alphabet, however, the Koreans have failed to exert its potential fully based on active researches on the cultural functions of its letter formations. It's also unfortunate that there are not enough efforts to make use of its values considering its much cultural potential.
Today there is increasing interest in the tradition spurred by also increasing cultural sensitivity. Many countries have engaged in active researches on their alphabets to represent the uniqueness of their cultures and expanded the scope of their uses. The trend urges Korea to develop Hangeul, one of its proud cultural assets, to have unique images differentiated from those of other cultures and to make active use of its originality as cultural value to increase its cultural competitivity.
Thus this study set out to compare and analyze the shapes of Hangeul letters according to the periods from the formative standpoint and to identify the aesthetic potential of Hangeul by reinterpreting the Hangeul tablets of Hunminjeongeum, which were written only in Hangeul among the many different versions of Hunminjeongeum presenting the purports and originality of Hangeul, and applying the resulting Hangeul patterns to modern clothes. It also aimed to contribute to the continuance and growth of creative design developments with Hangeul clothes.
In the stage of theoretical investigation before the manufacture stage, the study reviewed literature regarding the concept and origin of the Hangeul typography. After categorizing the changes to the Hangeul letters into the periods defined based on the various books and present documents, their shapes were analyzed to understand the characteristics of the Hangeul letters in terms of shapes in each period. The Hangeul letters were also examined according to the formative and structural characteristics to understand their structures and formative features. The cases of modern fashion design that employed Hangeul typography were reviewed to see in what shapes Hangeul typography was applied to modern clothes. As one of the techniques to express materials, mixed media were investigated in terms of the concepts and expressive progress in arts through literature and photographs. And the cases of fashion design using mixed media were analyzed to see in what shapes and methods they were expressed in fashion design.
Using the findings, the Hangeul patterns that were reorganized based on Hangeul typography were applied to modern clothes, and total eight pieces were created.
The results of the theoretical study were as follows:
First, a variety of original Hangeul letters were discovered in the history of the Hangeul letters. It turned out that their geometric and structural formative characteristics made them the perfect motives of design.
And secondly, the technique of mixed media examined in literature and photographs allowed artists to indulge themselves in the rich diversity of expressions. It had huge potential of being applied to every field of arts including visual art.
Based on the results, the following conclusions of work study were drawn:
First, the typography of the Hangeul tablets in Hunminjeongeum, which was reorganized based on the formative and structural characteristics of Hangeul letters, stroke perfect harmony with the aesthetics of simple shapes of modern fashion design.
Second, the Hangeul typography was reorganized by extending, highlighting, and transforming the Hunminjeongeum motives in which the originality and uniqueness of Hangeul letters were well and alive. Unique and differentiated images were created by applying the Hangeul typography to modern clothes.
Third, the digital textile printing technique allowed for the free material expressions of Hangeul typography. The monotonous and limited materials of digital textile printing were supplemented by introducing the technique of mixed media and incorporating the expressions of diverse qualities of materials into pattern works.
Fourth, the combinations of media led to the diversity of work expressions by integrating the images of material quality that's manually rendered into the computer graphics works in the process of pattern making. Deep and rich expressions of material quality were made possible onto the materials with simple surface structures by combining the manual rendering of mixed media for material expressions with digital approaches.
And fifth, Hangeul typography was reorganized and turned into patterns in many different ways by utilizing computer graphics on the images of diverse material feels. The results confirmed the infinite potential of Hangeul typography in creating new designs.
The study approached Hangeul letters of original shapes from the formative perspective and presented their aesthetic potential in addition to their functions as simple letters. It also expanded the scope of their uses as a design material by making patterns out of Hangeul typography that reorganized the Hangeul tablets in Hunminjeongeum and applying them to modern clothes. It also made a contribution to the continuance and growth of original design developments with Hangeul clothes and showed infinite potential of Hangeul as a global cultural content to promote Korea throughout the world.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

오늘날 문자는 일차적 언어적 전달뿐만 아니라 조형적 의미의 기능을 가지게 함으로써 디자인의 한 분야로 자리 잡게 하였다. 또한 인간의 사상과 언어를 담아내고 전달하는 문자는 작품으로서 공감대를 형성하기 위한 디자이너들에게 기초적인 관심의 대상이 아닐 수 없으며, 이러한 관심은 최근 들어 세계 유명 디자이너들의 작품을 통해서도 나타나고 있다.
또한 문자는 각각의 문화를 형성하는 중요한 밑거름이 되어지며 현재 세계에는 그 문화를 반영하는 각기 다른 기원과 생김새를 가지고 있는 수많은 문자들이 존재하고 있다. 그 많은 문자들 중에서도 한글은 발음기관을 상형하여 만든 독특한 글자로서 기본 글자에 획을 더하여 음성학적으로 동일계열의 글자를 파생해내는(ㄱ,ㅋ,ㄲ) 대단히 체계적인 글자이다. 또한 한글은 11,000개 이상의 소리표현을 낼 수 있는 세계에서 가장 많은 발음을 표기 할 수 있는 문자로 그 간결함과 합리적임 때문에 한국의 문맹률이 전 세계에서 가장 낮을 정도로 우수한 문자이다. 한글은 이러한 언어학적 측면에서 과학적 우수성을 나타 낼 뿐 아니라 문자의 조형적 측면에서도 기하학적 형태와 단순성에 기인한 독특하고 차별화된 문자 형태를 가지고 있다. 그러나 독창적 문자를 개발하고도 그에 걸 맞는 문자조형의 문화성에 대한 연구가 미비하여 그 가능성을 제대로 발휘하지 못하고 있으며, 그 뛰어난 문화적 잠재성에 비해 가치 활용의 노력도 부족한 현실이다.
현대에는 문화적 감수성이 높아지고 전통에 대한 관심 또한 늘어나면서 문화와 고유성을 잘 나타낼 수 있는 문자에 대한 연구가 각 나라마다 활발히 이루어지고 있고 그 활용범위도 점차 확대되고 있다. 따라서 우리 문화유산인 한글문자 또한 타문화와의 차별화된 고유이미지로서의 개발이 필요하며, 한글의 독창성을 문화적 가치로서 적극적으로 활용하여 문화적 경쟁력으로 삼기위한 노력 또한 필요하다.
이에 본 연구에서는 한글 자형의 시대별 글자형태를 조형적 측면으로 비교 분석 하여 한글의 제작의도와 독창성이 살아 있는 훈민정음 중 순수 한글로만 제작되어진 훈민정음 한글본을 재해석한 한글패턴을 현대의상에 적용하여 한글의 미학적으로의 가능성을 제시하고, 한글의상의 독창적인 디자인 개발을 지속 발전시키는데 그 목적이 있다.
본 연구의 작품제작을 위한 이론적 연구절차는 먼저 한글타이포그래피의 개념과 기원에 대해 문헌을 통해 고찰해 보았으며, 한글자형의 변천사를 각종 문헌과 현존 자료들을 토대로 시대별로 구분하여 그 형태를 분석함으로서 각 시대마다 나타나는 한글자형의 특징에 대해 살펴보았다. 또한 한글자형의 조형적 특성과 구조적 특성을 분석하여 그 구조와 조형성에 대해 살펴보았으며, 한글타이포그래피가 응용된 현대복식디자인 사례들을 통하여 한글타이포그래피가 현대의상에 어떠한 형태로 적용되는가를 알아보았다. 또한 작품의 소재표현 기법으로 믹스드미디어의 개념과 예술에 나타난 표현전개를 문헌자료와 작품사진을 통해 살펴보고, 믹스드미디어에 의한 복식디자인 사례를 분석하여 믹스드 미디어가 복식디자인에는 어떠한 형태와 방법으로 표현 되었는지 알아보았다.
이를 토대로 한글타이포그래피를 바탕으로 재구성 한 한글패턴을 현대의상에 적용하여 총 8벌의 작품을 제작하였다.
이를 통한 이론적 연구결과는 다음과 같다.
첫째, 한글자형의 역사 속에서 다양하고 독창적인 형태의 한글자형을 발견할 수 있었고, 한글자형의 기하학적이고 구조적인 조형적 특성은 디자인 모티브로 삼기에 적합함을 알 수 있었다.
둘째, 문헌자료와 작품사진을 통해 살펴본 믹스드 미디어 기법은 작가들에게 표현의 다양성을 가능하게 해 주었으며, 시각예술을 비롯한 각종 예술분야에 활용 가능함을 알 수 있었다.
위의 연구 결과를 토대로 한 작품연구의 결론은 다음과 같다.
첫째, 한글자형의 조형적이고 구조적인 특성을 바탕으로 재구성한 훈민정음 한글본 타이포그래피는 현대의상디자인의 단순한 형태미에 잘 조화됨을 알 수 있었다.
둘째, 한글자형의 독창성과 고유성이 살아있는 훈민정음 모티브를 확대, 강조, 변형 등을 통해 재구성하여 이루어진 한글타이포그래피를 현대의상에 적용함으로써 독특하고 차별화 된 이미지를 표출시킬 수 있었다.
셋째, 디지털 텍스타일 프린팅기법은 한글타이포그래피의 자유로운 소재표현을 가능하게 하였으며, 믹스드미디어기법을 도입하여 다양한 재질감표현을 패턴작업에 접목시켜 디지털 텍스타일 프린팅의 제한된 소재의 단조로움을 보완할 수 있었다.
넷째, 패턴제작과정에서 컴퓨터 그래픽 작업에 수작업 되어진 재질감이미지를 접목시킴으로써 매체의 혼합을 통한 작품표현의 다양성을 가져 올 수 있었으며, 소재표현을 위한 믹스드 미디어의 수작업과 디지털 방식이 결합되어 단순한 표면 구조를 지닌 소재에 풍부하고 깊이 있는 재질적 표현이 가능하였다.
다섯째, 다양한 재질감 이미지위에 컴퓨터그래픽을 활용하여 한글타이포그래피를 각기 다르게 재구성하고 그것을 패턴화 시킴으로써 한글 타이포그래피를 응용할 수 있는 무한한 디자인 창출의 가능성을 확인 할 수 있었다.
이에 본 연구는 독창적인 형태를 가진 한글자형을 조형적 측면으로 접근하여 단순한 문자로서의 기능만이 아닌 미학적으로의 가능성을 제시하고자 하였다. 또한 훈민정음 한글본을 재구성한 한글타이포그래피를 패턴으로 활용하여 현대의상에 적용함으로서 디자인 소재로의 활용범위를 넓히고 한글의상의 독창적인 디자인 개발을 지속 발전시키며, 나아가 한국을 알리는 글로벌 문화 콘텐츠로서의 무한한 가능성을 제시하고자 하였다.
