The number of associations for yoga teachers' training has been increased rapidly in Korea due to the rapid growth of demanding yoga practices. Consequently, improving the quality of yoga teachers has been one of the major issues in the yoga circle. Therefore, this study focuses on yoga teacher's course in formal education system, such as at the level of universities, colleges or graduate schools, as well as the current situation of associations for yoga teachers in Korea. The study surveyed 31 yoga centers, more than once in the three month period from April 2004 to June 2004 in Seoul and its vicinity areas. The survey included teachers' experiences, hours of training, a number of memberships, teaching methods and contents. Based on the survey, the study compares the methods of yoga teaching between Korea and Himalayan International Institute of Yoga Science and Philosophy. It is very meaningful that the study shows the current situation of yoga teachers and their teaching methods for the first time in Korea. The study is also more significant that it proposes the major tasks of the yoga circle in Korea. The proposals include the cultivation for qualified yoga teachers and yoga therapists at the level of formal education system, and the cooperative development of yoga teaching, yoga researching, yoga application and the clinical study of yoga.
