Green tea is one of the most popular beverage consumed by over two thirds of the world's population. Epigallocatechin gallate(EGCG), a cathechin polyphenol component, is the main ingredient of green tea extract. Several studies reported the oxidative effects of EGCG, suggesting that EGCG had a dual function of anti-oxidant and pro-oxidant potentials. Although the anti-carcinogenic and cancer inhibitory effects of EGCG have been widely reported, its genotoxicity is not clear and seldom reported. In this study, author examined the effects of EGCG on human chromosome in lymphocyte induced chromosomal aberration by anticancer agents, cisplatin(CDDP). The results showed that EGCG at concentrations of 2uM suppressed the chromosomal aberration induced by CDDP in blood lymphocytes. From these findings, author propose that EGCG might have a function of anti-oxidant in healthy human lymphocytes, which would involved in its inhibitory effects against chromosomal aberration induced by CDDP.
