This study aimed to examine the impact of middle school students’ perceptions of their parents’ positive/negative parenting styles on grit(perseverance of effort/consistency of interest) and explore the mediating effect of positive/negative self-esteem. It also verifies differences according to gender and city size. The analysis was conducted on second-year middle school students who participated in 2022, the Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey.
The results of the study were as follows. First, positive parenting styles had a positive(+) effect on persistence of grit, a positive(+) effect on positive self-esteem, and a negative(-) effect on negative self-esteem. Negative parenting styles was negatively(-) significant for grit’s effort persistence and consistency of interest, and positively(+) significant for negative self-esteem. Second, the effect of only positive self-esteem on the two grits was positive(+) and significant. Third, among the mediating effects of positive/negative self-esteem between positive/negative parenting styles and grit, only the mediating effect of positive self-esteem was significant. Fourth, the research model’s paths showed differences in gender and city size.
Based on these results, practical implications of social welfare for improving middle school students’ self-esteem and grit were derived, and suggestions for follow-up research were made.
