한국사회에서 공화주의의 이념은 부활할 수 있는가? -공화주의의 정치철학적 고찰- = Can the Ideology of Republicanism have a revival in Korean Society? -the political consideration of the Ideology of Republicanism-

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The purpose of this paper is to politically and philosophically understand the meaning and identity of the name of the country, Republic of Korea, and to pursue the righteous ways for it to be a healthy republican society. As mentioned earlier, Korean constitution article 1 states that Korea is a democratic republican country. This article has been highly symbolic in exhibiting the identity of the country since the establishment of the Korean government. The phrase Republic, as is suggested in itself, is a characteristic of the public mentality. The etymology of the concept Republicanism originated from the concept of Res publica, a common business, which means all citizens` public matter, and not that of the ruling party. In other words the concept of Republicanism is in the interest of the public and the public good from the respect of politics and socio-politics rather than a private matter of individual citizens. Republicanism as well as the identity of this country cannot be simply dealt on the private level. From this view, in our society the most seriously exposed problem today is whether public deeds indeed function in public domain. If the public interests are to reflect discussions and agreement of the state policy, one must seriously ask whether that public interests are really executed for an average citizen at large. Also one must ask whether political, economic, educational, health, social welfare systems are operating for the best of the public. If not, it is the time to look for an alternative solution to these problems. In this paper, the author will examine the long history of the ideology of Republicanism including the theories of Kant, Arendt, and Habermas. Futhermore, how we can move on to a better society will be suggested based on the examination of the concept of Republicanism.
