Chapter : In this study TPC, DPPH and the antimicrobial Ⅰactivity of 10 varieties of Citrus fruits (ethanol extract) were studied in regard to the development of functional cosmetic materials. The peel and pulp of 10 varieties of Citrus fruits(Orange, Grapefruit, Yooza, Lemon, Dangyooza, Hwanggeumhyang, Hallabong, Cheonhyehyang, Redhyang and Onjumilgam) were
separated and extracted with 95% ethanol. The total polyphenol content, DPPH radical scavenging activity and antimicrobial activity were investigated.
The total polyphenol content was higher in the peel extracts than in the pulp extracts (p<0.05), and the Lemon (Citrus limon) peel extract and the Dangyooza (Citrus grandis Osbeck) peel extract showed the highest activity compared to the other extracts. Also, the DPPH radical scavenging activity was higher in the peel extracts than in the pulp extracts (p<0.05). The IC50 value of the Dangyooza peel extract was 1.183 ± 0.034 mg/ml, and for the Lemon peel extract it was 1.339 ± 0.033 mg/ml.
The antimicrobial activity was higher in the pulp extracts than in the peel extracts (p<0.05). The Lemon, Dangyooza, and Yooza pulp extracts showed antimicrobial activity in four strains (B.subtilis, S.aureus, S.epidermidis, P.aeruginosa), and the Lemon pulp extracts showed the highest activity compared to the other extracts.
The ethanol extracts of Dangyooza and Lemon were screened as some of the most promising functional cosmetic materials.
Chapter : The ferment extracts (containing nitric oxide Ⅱ metabolite: NO, NO2-, R-NO) of Dangyooza (Citrus grandis Osbeck) and Lemon (Citrus limon) mixed with ferment extract of Lettuce (Lactuca sativa) were used to study the symptom improvement effect in a DNFB-induced atopic dermatitis mouse model.
Bacillus subtilis was used to prepare a ferment extract (containing nitrogen oxide metabolites), and the same amounts of each Citrus ferment extract (Dangyooza; dried peel and pulp, Lemon; dried peel and pulp, whole Lemon; fresh) and Lettuce ferment extract were mixed 1:1. To study the effect of the ferment extract as a cosmetic material to improve atopic symptoms, the ferment extract was applied to the DNFB-induced BALB/C mouse model for 7 days, and the ear thickness (edema), spleen index, and serum cytokine (TNF- , IL-4), and histopathological α examination were performed.
The results of this study showed that the atopic dermatitis improved in the experimental group in which the ferment extract mixture was applied in the DNFB-induced atopic dermatitis
BALB/C mice. The improvement in atopic dermatitis in the fermentation mixture increased in the order DUL, LUL, LEL, and DEL.
Chapter : The effects of fresh Lemon ferment extract, Ⅲ Lettuce ferment extract, and a mixture of fresh Lemon and Lettuce ferment extract on skin lesions in a DNFB-induced atopic
      dermatitis mouse model were studied.
In all of the experiments, the symptoms of the experimental group were significantly improved compared to the control group(p<0.05), and there was no significant difference between the
mixture of fresh Lemon and Lettuce ferment extract and the fresh Lemon ferment extract. The improvement in atopic dermatitis with the ferment extracts increased in the order LSF, CLF, and LLF.
The edema of the right ear was reduced in all experimental groups to which the ferment extract was applied. This means reduced inflammation in atopic lesions in BALB/C mice. The
improvement in atopic symptoms were greater in the ferment extracts of the fresh materials than in the ferment extracts of the dried materials.
Overall, the total polyphenol content, antioxidant activity and antibacterial activity of Lemon and Dangyooza were high. The ferment extracts of Lemon and Dangyooza were effective in
improving the symptoms of atopic dermatitis in the DNFB-induced atopic dermatitis mouse model. Lemon ferment extract prepared with extract of fresh material was more effective at treating the atopic dermatitis lesions than the ferment extract prepared with dried material. The ferment extracts containing nitric oxide had the effect of reducing the inflammation and improving the atopic dermatitis due to the synergistic action of the ferment active ingredients and nitric oxide metabolites. Therefore, the ferment extracts of Lemon and Dangyooza have the potential to be used as important functional raw materials for natural cosmetics.
