Many of the issues regarding intimacy and sexuality involve relationships between persons with mentally retarded, as well as between these individuals and other community members. As persons with mentally retarded become more integrated into community life, meet more community members, and are supported in greater diversity of friendships, other issues regarding sexuality must also be taken into account, Person with mentally retarded themselves speak eloquently of the importance of sexuality and intimacy; these types of relationships should be supported. However, often due to this very importance, both confusion and vulnerability may occur. as a range of relationships develops, misunderstandings about the nature of the connections might arise in some cases; the limits of certain relationships might be misunderstood or overtures of friendship might be interpreted to have sexual overtones when they actually do not. Individuals may also have insufficient information and skills related to relationship building, and greater support for community connections may increase their vulnerability and potential for abuse.
A volume on friendships and community connections would be incomplete without consideration of these important issues. Support for friendship should include support for the entire spectrum of relationships, including the most intimate and affectionate types of relationships. Both the factors of successful support and potential problems need to be addressed.
