The Pisan Cantos는 Ezra Pound가 Pisa의 미국 육군 D.T.C. Genji, Awoi, Cavalcanti의 인물들, Aucassin, Lope de Vega의 인물들이 있고, 역사상 인물들로 Manes, Malatesta, Bellini, Duccio, Capello, Erigena Scotus, Carolus, Isotta, Lombardo 父子, Bernard, Ugolino, Cunizza, Catarina, San Juan, John Adams, Sappho, Lucrezia, la Stuarda, Verlaine, Mozart, Ponce de Leon, Carpaccio, Sandro, Jacopo, Epictetus, Aurelius, 孔子, Horace, Ovid, 成湯, Swedenborg, del Cossa, Cosimo, Whitman, Swinburne, Bertrand, Rossetti, Henry VIII의 왕비들, Lancaster, York, Chaucer, Birrell, Rothschild, Barabbas, 등이 있고, 요즘 사람들로 Mussolini, Eliot, Frobenius, Bunting, Yeats, Joyce, Cocteau, Upward, Gesell, Beardsley, Lawrence, Mead, Laval, Petain, Quisling, Gaudier-Brzeska, Rousselot, Montagu, Williams, Symons, Santayana, Natalie, Neptune, Clara, D.T.C.

The Pisan Cantos is a long prison poem composed by Ezra Pound while he was detained at D.T.C. in Pisa. It is subjective dramatic epic; at once drama, satire, documentary, catalogue, sermon, reportage, diary, confession, essay, meditation, daydream, monologue, aside, elegy, epigram, hymn, lyric, and epic. Its form is open, with genre destroyed. There innumeralbe voices are heard with necessary connectives between them suppressed. They are from myths, legends, fictions, histories and real lives. They overlap. They repeat themselves. Pound outlived the fear of imminent death with recollection and observation. He, modelling on Divine Comedy and Odyssey, chose journey (adventure or periplum) as an allegory of life. He continuously takes himself for Odysseus who wandered the trackless dark primitive sea, lie was 'ou tis' waiting his turn to die caged in the Cyclops' cave. Many voices of quotations and references, borrowings and allusions, translations and imitations, suggestions and parodies, amount to a chaos, without proper connections and with so many rhetorical, temporal, aesthetic discontinuities. Many connectives are lacking between recollections, between observations, and also between recollection and observation. Discontinuities, when they are connected, are connected by associations. They make either chaos or tension. Among those whose voices are heard are: from myths, Dionysus, Dioce, Odysseus, Circe, Elpenor, Wanjina, Kuanon, Yao, Shun, Yu, Cythera, Demeter, Aeneas, Athene, Persephone; from fictions, Cunegonde, Tennin, Kumasaka, Genji, Awoi, Cavalcanti's figures, Aucassin, Lope de Vega's figures; form histories, Manes, Malatesta, Bellini, Duccio, Capello, Erigena Scotus, Carolus, Isotta, Lombardo and his son, Bernard, Ugolino, Cunizza, Catarina, San Juan, Adams, Sappho, Lucrezia, la Stuarda, Verlaine, Mozart, Ponce de Leon, Carpeccio, Sandro, Jacopo, Epictetus, Aurelius, Confucius, Horace, Ovid, Tching Tang, Swedenborg, del Cossa, Cosimo, Whitman, Swinburne, Bertrand, Rossetti, Henry Vlll's queens, Lancaster, York, Chaucer, Birrell, Rothschild, Barabbas; and from modern lives, Mussolini, Eliot, Frobenius, Bunting, Joyce, James, Cocteau, Upward, Gesell, Beardsley, Lawrence, Mead, Laval, Petain, Quisling, Gaudier-Brzeska, Yeats, Rousselot, Montagu, Williams, Symons, Santayana, Natalie, Neptune, Clara, D.T.C. soldiers, Churchill, et al. Confucianism provided Pound with moral foundation of social justice and fair distribution of wealth for his anti-usury, anti-capitalism and anti-imperialism. Especially 'right-naming' in his Analects and 'thingdefining' in Ta Hio gave a basis of practical virtue to Frobenius' paideuma for Pound's cultural use. The chaos of recollection and observation is multiplied by colloquialism which is his aesthetic tenet and by errors which are scattered throughout the Cantos. He recollected places as well as voices. Places of his vigorous activities in the past, in Venice, Paris, Southern France, London, New York and others, restaurants, for example, where he met friends, were recollected at random without comments. They increase the chaos. Pound desired palingenesis inside the cave of death, D.T.C. He needed `tre donne' he loved. For him they were palingenesis and light in the dark. Sacred coitu was at once palingenesis and illumination. Chaos was his struggle for light in `magna nox animae.' Chaos was failure. It is impossible for man to see light of gnosis in the dark. Attempt is success where there is no success. Failure is success. Pound attempted to get gnosis. There was chaos, and 'the field of understanding' was extended. He survived the ordeal of death by playing 'deadpan' as if his tragedy were comedy of other people whose voices narrated it.
