This study develops a multi-sector, multi-region general equilibrium model that explicitly captures interregional and intersectoral linkages in the Korean economy, and structurally analyzes spillover effects of region-specific productivity improvements. Building on the framework of Caliendo, Parro, Rossi-Hansberg, and Sarte (2018), the model is calibrated to the Korean economy using regional input–output tables from Bank of Korea, covering 17 regions and 33 industries.
The results show that the effects of regional productivity shocks vary substantially depending on regional industrial composition, trade network structure, and spatial proximity. Productivity improvements in Seoul generate widespread spillover effects across the national economy due to high network centrality and industrial agglomeration, but are also accompanied by declines in employment and GDP in other regions, thereby exacerbating interregional disparities. In contrast, productivity shocks in manufacturing-oriented regions exhibit stronger linkages, resulting in more even transmission to neighboring regions. Furthermore, the analysis demonstrates that strategically
combining spatially dispersed hub cities yields larger national GDP gains and greater reductions in regional disparities. These findings suggest that hub-city strategies based on industrial and logistics networks are more effective in promoting balanced regional development.
By quantitatively identifying structural transmission channels, this study enables policymakers to evaluate regional productivity-enhancing policies from both efficiency and equity perspectives.
