This paper attempts to trace what the faith of early Korean Presbyterian church was constituted of and what was lacking in it, especially by examining The Salient Doctrines of Christianity (「셩교촬리」) among some evangelism literatures that greatly helped to form her faith in the early times of mission to Korea when any form of Confession of Faith was not available.
It is very significant that The Salient Doctrines of Christianity, which covered the whole spectrum about the content of Christian faith, was published by “Korea Mission Publisher” (조선성교서회), comparing with other early literatures which dealt with mainly some points directly related with evangelism, such as `salvation,` `regeneration,` `repentance,` and `human sins.` For it referred to the contents applicable to both Presbyterians and Methodists.
Thus, it can be admitted that the contents were under the influence of evangelicalism rather than the Reformed faith. On the other hand, in the condition of being still unclear about the definition of theological terms, the fact that it used the native conception of god or the native name of god interchangeably in the place of Biblical God made it difficult to understand the triune God and to form the basis of sound theology. That brings us again to our senses the fact that it is important to seek to form and review the sound terms and theology for literature evangelism, no matter how urgent and crucial the evangelism should be and how critical the church planting through it must be.
Nevertheless, the fact that it not only dealt with the contents of faith, but gave a good deal of space to the Christian life as well as the concrete procedures for becoming a Christian shows clearly that Christianity is a genuine religion which should manifest its value through life. It must be a quite meaningful effort to have sought to strike a balance between faith and life.
