The purpose of this paper is to examine the recent trends of American evangelicalism, especially concentrating on「An Evangelical Manifesto」 published on the 7th of May, 2008, by eighty representative American evangelicals. This paper consists of three main parts. The first part is a survey of the general history and doctrines of evangelicalism. It explains that there have been three views on the origin of evangelicalism; originating (1) from the time of the early church, (2) from the time of the Reformation, or (3) from the 20th century. This paper recognizes that various traditions of faith and theology have been included in evangelical movement.
The second part deals with the identity of American evangelicalism. After describing the history of the evangelical movement in America, it explains the sense of identity of modern American evangelicals. Then, it analyzes「An Evangelical Manifesto」.
The third part deals with the American evangelicals` self-consciousness of their tasks. They agree that evangelicals should reform the practices in church life and go back to the genuine evangelical tradition. In addition, evangelicals should rehabilitate their tradition of sound participation in public affairs.
「An Evangelical Manifesto」does not present the definition of `evangelicals` clearly. In the manifesto the contents of the confession of faith is comparatively short. The manifesters` tracing of the origin of evangelicals back to the early church dilutes rather than establishes their identity. Although the manifesters declare that “Evangelicals are Christians who define themselves, their faith, and their lives according to the Good News of Jesus of Nazareth,” when they ask all people to commit to a civil public square, they do not clarify their attitude according to their faith, but according to their political, social and cultural concern for other people. Despite such limits, as evangelicalism has already emerged as one of leading traditions for the future Christianity, the consideration of「An Evangelical Manifesto」will be helpful to the future move of Korean churches.
