Education of Chinese letters in elementary schools is being done in various forms such as morning study, extracurriculum activity and discretional activity. However, education of Chinese letters is being done in individual methods of schools and teachers without a set curriculum, it is doubtful whether a proper education is executed. There has been a change in concept and methodology of teaching of Chinese letters, but it is still more focused on writing than on reading. Current situation being so, it is important to reconsider education of reading of Chinese letters. I think that education of reading Chinese letters in elementary schools should go beyond learning mere phonetics of letter to build a structure of knowledge on understanding of meaning of letters. I surveyed status of class of Chinese letters in elementary schools and found that teaching of reading Chinese letters was done through learning shapes, sound and meaning of letters, and through games and activities, and through web-pages, and students learned individual letters and letters in sentences. Three things were made issue of; necessity of teachers` changing their concept of teaching of reading, confusion of meanings between homonyms, learning Chinese letters in context. And importance of constructive teaching of Chinese letters was maintained, that is to say, it will be of the best benefit for students of Chinese letters to construct their knowledge of Chinese letters through student-centered activities, instead of one-way instruction of teachers, and interaction between students.
