The purpose of this study was to identify the problems in current elemenfaiy school physical education in Korea and to suggest some guidelines for the development. Physical education courses in elementary schools are subdivided into required physical education class, intramurals and inteischolastics. The required physical education class is being operated wider the direction of the curriculum constituted by Ministry of Education. But elementary school physical education is not being implemented due to shortage of facilities and equipments, abnormal operation of physical education class, inadequate appointment of physical education specialists, invariability of content program, and inappropriateness of instruction and evaluation. These problems may be solved by normal operation of curriculum, profession development of teachers and expanse of facilities and equipments. Intramurals can be subdivided into intramurals athletics activities, sports crub activities, drop-in activities. Intramural athletics activities in elementray school are being operated in the various forms of athletic meeting, team sports game, relay game, rope game. Sports club activities are being implemented as extra-activities and special ability programs. Drop-in activities are performed mainly by boys afier school, and their favorite games are soccer and baseball. Intramurals in elementary school are lacking. In order to develop these activities, facilities and equipments should be expanded and program content varied Interscholastics are interschool activities performed by the highly skilled students. In order to develop interscholastics, program content should be gradually increased, athletes club supported, elite sports concerned.
