러시아 사회주의 혁명기 예술의 특징을 통해서 본 디아길레프의 발레뤼스 = Artistic Features in Russian Revolutionary Period: Diaghilev`s Ballet Russes

The present study reconsiders the art historical significances of Serge Pavloirich Diaghilev``s (1872-1929) Ballet Russes through artistic characteristics in the Russian revolutionary period. In this period, artistic creations and activities were based on socialism and public orientedness. Artistic works were created, performed, and exhibited on the basis of the both in Russia. This meant the destruction of artistic forms and contents formed under the Tsar system. Diaghilev``s Ballet Russes stood in the very center of such a change. Diaghilev``s artistic significances are roughly divided into the following: First, he recognized the importance of art in human life than any other person regardless of socialist ideology, and played an important role in enabling music, art and choreography to accompany ballet by employing various artists, such as dancer, painter, composer, poet and singer, and fusing their fatures with each other harmoniously. Second, he fundamentally changed the fixed notion on the Ballet Russes by not distinguishing between men and women in its composition. Third, the Ballet Russes led by Diaghilev created the most innovative choreographic style of the time through its unique avant-garde and experimental works. The Ballet Russes sought, in particular, an escape from plot-based ballets, giving a new direction in choreography around the world. To sum up, the experimental spirit in Diaghilev``s Ballet Russes was an artistic revolution that presented a new vision for contemporary ballet as well as avant-garde art.
