This paper deals with in-process recognition of chip formation in trurning. According to the demand of high-efficiency in cutting process, the importance of chip problem has been raised, and so it is important of cutting force, and the in-process detection of the chip formation is one of the most important technologies in completely automatic operation of cutting process.
As a result, the following conclusion can be drown.
1. In turning, the dynamic component of cutting force through the band pass filter(80-500HZ) reflects the broken condition of chip accurately, and its wavy pattern has periodicity.
2. The dynamic component of cutting force in broken type is bigger than that of continuous type.
3. After judging from whether the chip in real on-line condition had been broken or not, with the threshold obtained from the experiment.
The on-line system was well recognizing the continuous type and broken type.
