공자의 온고지신의 교사관 = Confucius` Ongojinsin(溫故知新) and Basic Ability of Teachers

The purpose of this study is to clarify the meaning of `ongojisin` (cherishing old and acquiring new knowledge) expressed in the Analects of Confucius (論語) and investigate its suggestion to the basic ability of a teacher. First of all, Confucius(孔子) himself was a great teacher. So, his life represents the process of cultivation as a teacher- He retrospects his entire life in the Analects as follow :At fifteen I set my mind upon wisdom. At thirty I stood firm. At forty I was free from doubt- At fifty I understood the laws of Heaven. At sixty my ear was docile. At seventy I could follow the desires of my heart without transgressing the right It is considered that `ongojisin` is one of the key words which explain the life of teachers in the Analects. It is expressed in the following passage, He who keeps on reviewing his old and acquiring new knowledge may become a teacher of others in this passage, its meaning is often interpreted in terms of the qualification of teachers. But, as Dasan(茶山) interpreted adequately, in this study, it is argued that its meaning is understood not in terms of the qualification for becoming a teacher but in terms of the reward of being a teacher. As it were, becoming a teacher is worth because of being able to enjoy `ongojisin`. The conclusion of the study is as follow : First, a teacher is such a person who is really delightful for his own intellectual growth. Second, a teacher is completed through on-going self-cultivation. Thirdly, a teacher should be morally excellent.
