타이포그래피 디자인과 개념 미술에서의 텍스트 활용 방식에 관한 비교 연구 = A Study on the Comparison of Text Utilization Method in Typography Design and Conceptual Art

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This dissertation aims at conducting comparative analysis on the expansion of possibility of expression of the various works of typography as interesting contents in both areas of conceptual art and typography design which mainly utilize text, in the present situation where various genres of arts coexist with their own personality as opposed to the past. Even though the areas of conceptual art and typography design commonly deal with text from the standpoint of visual style, the text utilization method of conceptual art shows difference from that of typography design in that the conceptual art basically puts emphasis on the meaning given to forms rather than forms and materials themselves. Therefore, this thesis, from understanding this, studied the relationships between conceptual art and typography design through the changing of the times and the cases of designers or artists, and performed comparative analysis on the characteristics of various recent attempts utilizing text in new ways. Through this, I could ascertain the changes of the images and text utilization methods dealt with in both areas of contemporary conceptual art and typography design, the differences among different modes. and the aspects of typography seeking new perspectives. It will serve as a momentum of presenting alternative directions in the method of expression of typography design and in the realm of expression, and it is to be hoped that this will be a basic study for experimenting with typography designs in various angles.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 논문은 과거와는 다르게 여러 장르의 미술들이 개성을 가지고 혼재하는 지금, 텍스트를 주로 활용하는 개념 미술과 타이포그래피 디자인 두 영역에서 다양한 타이포그래피 작품들이 흥미로운 콘텐츠로서 미술과 디자인에 그 표현 가능성을 확대해 가고 있음을 비교 분석해 보는데 그 목적을 두었다. 개념 미술과 타이포그래피 디자인 영역은 시각적인 스타일면에서 텍스트를 공통적으로 다루고는 있으나 개념 미술은 형태와 재료 보다는 근본적으로 그 형태에 부여된 의미에 더 중점을 두고 있기 때문에 타이포그래피 디자인에서의 텍스트 활용 방식과는 다르게 모색되고 있음을 알 수 있다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 이 점에 착안 하여 개념 미술과 타이포그래피 디자인간의 관계를 시대적인 변화와 디자이너 혹은 작가와 작품의 사례들을 통해 고찰하고, 최근 새로운 방식으로 텍스트를 활용한 다양한 작업들의 시도들을 파악하여 비교 분석 하였다. 이를 통해서 현대의 개념 미술과 타이포그래피 디자인 두 영역에서 다루어지는 이미지와 텍스트 활용 방식의 변화, 다른 양상의 차이 그리고 새로운 관점들을 모색해 가는 타이포그래피의 면모를 확인 할 수 있었다. 이는 타이포그래피 디자인 표현 방법이나 표현 영역에 있어 또 다른 방향을 제시하는 계기가 될 것이며 앞으로 더욱 다양한 각도에서 타이포그래피 디자인 실험을 해 보는데 있어 기초 연구가 되기를 기대한다.
