Baek Seok and Long Ying-Zong are creators with rare and unique styles and artistic perspectives in the literary history of Korea and Taiwan, respectively. Their ideals are subtly presented in romantic poetry. Both Baek Seok and Long Ying-Zong lived through colonial eras. Because of limitations during colonial times and great political pressure, the poets adopted a literary style of using indirect criticism to present the content of their ethnic ideology and firm consciousness regarding ethnic reality. In the social and historical context of the colonial reality under Japanese imperial rule, Baek Seok and Long Ying-Zong’s poetry present a relative reflection of the outer world and the inner self. The inner consciousness described in their poetry focuses on discovering the history and reality of their ethnicity. Similar to various writers in the era, Baek Seok and Long Ying-Zong also lived in times of brutality. They were inappropriately neglected and stripped of their true value, despite their suffering and literary spirit. Baek Seok and Long Ying-Zong experienced both the Japanese imperial rule and the Cold War; thus the psychological and physical strain was substantial. Whether the neglect of Baek Seok and Long Ying-Zong’s outstanding achievements as writers was voluntary or involuntary, it is a great loss and even tragic. This study is primarily focused on Baek Seok and Long Ying-Zong’s poetry during Japanese imperial rule. By examining the relative appearance of the outer world and the inner self, and adopting the perspective of self-consciousness formed amid the chaos and suppression of colonial society and history, this study aims to explore the inner consciousness presented in Baek Seok’s and Long Ying-Zong’s poetry.
