ABSTRACTThis paper is attempted to show how the discourse can be connected coherently,
which is one of the important fields in discourse analysis. In chapter II the dogma of the generative transformational grammar is examined.
For this English free variational sentences, possessive forms and subcategorization
rules are examined. As a result, it is proved that sentence level approach and context
free approach is not appropriate for language research. In chapter III speech act theory is roughly introduced, which claims that all sentenc-
es have locutionary acts, illocutionary acts and perlocutionary acts. Among these we
must examine illocutionary acts carefully, because they can be changed according to
the context. This shows that when we study language, not only its content but its
function must be considered.
