This study aimed to know what art therapists specializing in adolescents experience while they are in a session with their clients. A focus interview, one of the qualitative research methods was conducted for this study. The study participants were 12 art therapists specializing in adolescents. They were working at a public institution or private counseling center, with their work experience ranging from 3 to 10 years. They were divided into two groups of 6. Each group was given about 3 hour long interview.
This interview employed a question asking method modified from the question asking method presented by Kruger and Casey (2000). The interview ran with open ended questions moving in the order of introduction question, shifting questions, main questions and ending questions. For the analysis to be objective, two analysts and one supervisor participated in the analysis. The interview was transcribed and analyzed based on the method presented by Morgan and Scannell (1998).
The researcher read the interview content carefully to understand the contents clearly. The interview was analyzed and categorized based on the following criteria: the words, context, internal consistency, frequency of opinions, the diversity and strength of the opinion, uniqueness, and importance. The analysis was divided into three units: the motivation to be an adolescent art therapist, experiences through therapy sessions, and qualities to be an adolescent art therapist.
The first unit, the motivation to be an adolescent art therapist consisted of 2 themes, 5 categories, and 22 concepts. The second unit, experiences through therapy sessions consisted of 5 themes, 12 categories, and 60 concepts. The third unit, qualities to be an adolescent art therapist consisted of 2 themes, 4 categories, and 13 concepts.
First, the two themes of the first unit are as follows: the therapist's personal experience and the therapist's sense of responsibility. Second, the five themes of the second are as follows: conflicts emerging with the therapy being structured, lack of skills as a therapist during the session, overcoming the counseling process of adolescent art therapy, and personal maturity of the therapist as an occasion for change. Third, the two themes of the third unit are as follows: an occasion to gain the professionality as a therapist and personal maturity as a therapist.
The significance of this study is that this study results can help adolescent art therapists develop a therapy strategy and that this study results can help understand what adolescent art therapists experience through the therapy session.
