사회복지연구에서의 매개효과 검증: 예방프로그램의 효과성검증을 중심으로 = mediation effects in Social work research

국문 초록 (Abstract)

최근 들어, 사회복지학에서 매개효과를 검증하려는 연구들이 증가하고 있다. 매개효과는 독립변인과 종속변인의 인과관계를 매개하는 변인의 효과를 의미한다. 매개효과에 대한 검증은 인과적 관계를 보다 구체적으로 확인시켜 줌으로써, 왜 그리고 어떻게 독립변인이 종속변인의 변화를 가져왔는지를 설명해준다. 특히, 예방 및 개입프로그램이 궁극적인 문제의 해결을 가져오는데 있어, 일차적인 프로그램의 목표라 할 수 있는 매개변인의 변화가 문제의 해결에 어떠한 영향을 미쳤는지를 확인하는 과정이 바로 매개효과의 검증이라 할 수 있다. 하지만 매개효과에 대한 관심의 증가에 비해, 매개효과의 개념과 검증방법에 대한 소개는 충분히 이루어지지 않고 있다. 이에 본 논문에서는 대표적인 매개효과의 검증방법인 Baron & Kenny(1986)의 방법을 중심으로 매개효과의 검증의 절차와 고려사항을 검토해보고자 한다. 매개효과의 검증도구로는 다중회귀분석과 구조방정식모형이 가장 많이 활용되고 있으나, 본 논문에서는 접근용이성과 활용도를 고려하여 다중회귀분석을 통한 매개효과 분석방법에 초점을 두고자 한다. 마지막으로 매개효과의 분석 시 고려해야 할 사항과 해석상의 주의사항을 예방프로그램의 효과분석과 결부하여 제시하였다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The purpose of this article is to provide nontechnical explanation of how to examine mediator effect and demonstrate how to analyze it. Mediator is defined as a variable that explains the relation between a predictor and an outcome, and it is the mechanism through which a predictor influences an outcome variable. Within the context of evaluating prevention and intervention programs, detecting mediators as well as outcomes provide information on which mechanisms are critical for influencing the effect of programs. This information can enable us to improve the effective components of the program and remove the ineffective components from it. And it can contribute to build and test theory grounded by prevention program. In this article, the most common method developed by Baron & Kenny(1986) for testing mediation effect was introduced and the use of multiple regression method for detecting mediator effects is mainly explained because it is an accessible technique included in most statistical packages. An example and step-by-step guide for performing mediation effect analysis are also provided. In addition, suggestions for further reading and some considerations on mediation effect are provided.
