『석보상절』불교주해의 의의 = The Purpose of the Buddhist Annotated Translation of the Seokbosangjeol

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The Seokbosangjeol 釋譜詳節 (Episodes from the Life of Buddha) is a valuable work for various reasons. It has been compiled using the Hangeul alphabet created by King Sejong, and it was first published in twenty-four volumes, of which ten volumes are extant. While numerous studies have been conducted on the extant editions and their content, most of these relied on and were biased toward philological approaches, and thus, provide an insufficient understanding of the content of the work itself.
As this work narrates the life and teachings of Buddha, by collecting and compiling extracts from various Buddhist sūtras in Classical Chinese before translating them into vernacular Korean, it is imperative to trace the source and provide copious annotations regarding the Buddhist terms and content. Since 2012, Korean linguists and Buddhist scholars in the context of a joint research project at the Academy of Buddhist Studies of Dongguk University, have annotated and translated the entire extant text of the Seokbosangjeol. The present article investigates the Buddhist meaning of this newly produced annotated translation and confirms the following points.
First, due to the participation of Buddhist scholars, annotations related to Buddhism have drastically increased in number and the accuracy of the content, compared to previously published editions. Second, quoted passages from Buddhist sūtras have been more efficiently identified and traced back to their sources. Through this, both the use of Buddhist sūtras in the early Joseon period and the development of ideas in the Seokbosangjeol have become more clearly defined and, concurrently, translation into modern Korean has become more accurate. Third, by applying unified principles and guidelines through one single academic institution, a unified and coherent translation and annotation of all the extant versions of the Seokbosangjeol was made possible, which in turn provides the potential reader with more convenient access to the text.
However, there are remaining issues related to undiscovered editions or similar editions of uncertain provenience. These will be addressed in the upcoming annotated translation project of the Wolinseokbo月印釋譜 (The Moon’s Reflection on the Buddha’s Genealogy). If the research methodology that has been hitherto used in the annotated translation of the Seokbosangjeol is also applied to the annotated Korean translation of the Wolinseokbo, this will the function as a way of increasing the purpose and meaning of the annotated translation of the Seokbosangjeol.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

세종대왕이 창제한 한글을 이용하여 석가모니불의 일대기를 서술한 『석보상절(釋譜詳節)』은 다양한 방면에서 귀중한 가치를 가지고 있는 저술이다. 전체 24권 가운데 10권이 학계에 알려졌고 이에 대한 영인과 해제 작업을 거쳐 많은 연구가 이루어졌다. 그러나 연구의 분야가 국어학에 치우쳐 있어서 저술의 이해에 부족한 면이 있었다. 이 책은 석가모니의 행적과 교화 내용을 여러 불전에서 찾아 편집한 뒤 한글로 번역한 것이므로 저본이 된 불전을 찾거나 서술에 나타나는 불교적 용어와 내용을 주해할 필요가 있었던 것이다.
동국대학교 불교학술원에서 2012년부터 국어학자와 불교학자가 공동으로 참여하여 그간 발견된 『석보상절』 전체를 주해하는 사업을 전개하였다. 이 글은 이 사업을 통해 새로 역주된 『석보상절』의 불교적 의미를 찾고자 하는 것이다. 이를 통해 다음 몇 가지 성과를 확인할 수 있었다.
첫째, 불교학자가 참여함으로써 기존에 발간된 역주서에 비해 불교주해가 대폭 늘어나고 내용도 정확해졌다는 점이다. 둘째, 『석보상절』의 저본이 된 불전 구절을 더욱 명확하게 찾아냈다는 점이다. 이를 통해 조선 초기의 불전 활용 양상과 『석보상절』의 내용 전개가 분명히 드러나고 또한 현대어 번역도 한층 정확해질 수 있었다, 셋째, 한 기관에서 동일한 체제와 원칙을 가지고 현재 알려져 있는 모든 『석보상절』을 통일성 있게 번역, 주해하여 독자들이 한층 편리하게 읽을 수 있게 되었다는 점이다.
그러나 남은 과제도 있으니 아직 미상인 채로 있거나 유사하지만 불확실한 저본이 남아있는 점이다. 이는 이어질 『월인석보(月印釋譜)』의 주해 작업을 통해 보완되리라고 생각된다. 『석보상절』을 증보하고 세종의 월인천강지곡(月印千江之曲)을 합본한 책이 『월인석보』이기 때문이다. 『석보상절』을 주해하는 과정에서 축적된 연구방법이 잘 활용되어 완성도 높은 『월인석보』의 현대어 역주가 이루어진다면 이 또한 『석보상절』 주해사업의 의미를 높이는 요소가 될 것이다.
