어머니와 자녀 간 자원교환의 호혜성에 관한 연구 = The Reciprocity of Resource Exchange between Children and Their Mothers: Equity, Altruism, and the Relationship Satisfaction

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 교환이론과 자원이론들을 활용하여 어머니와 자녀 간의 호혜성이 양 당사자의 관계만족도에 어떻게 연관되는지를 관찰하고자 하였다. 호혜성 개념은 어머니와 자녀 간 자원교환에 있어서의 형평성과 불형평성으로 구체화된다. 그러고 불형평성은 다시금 자신에게 유리한 방향으로의 이기적 불형평과 상대방에게 유리한 방향으로의 이타적 불형평으로 분기한다. 이들 개념을 활용하여 교환관계의 특성과 자원의 특성에 띠라 구분된 6 자원영역 각각에서 교환의 형평성과 관계만족도 간의 연관성을 분석하였다. 연구에 사용된 자료는 서울과 수도권에서 중·고 ·대학교에 재학 중인 자녀 150명과 그들의 어머니 150명을 대상으로 한 설문조사를 통해 수집되었다. 분석결과, 상대방의 시간과 체력 및 지원의 소모를 통해서만 가능한 서비스나 물품 혹은 금전 등과 같은 물질적 지원의 경우 자녀는 형평한 교환이 이루어질수록 어머니와의 관계를 만족스럽게 느낀다. 반면 어머니의 경우엔 물질적 지원의 교환양상은 자녀와의 관계 인식에 유의미한 연관성을 보이지 않는다. 한편 지위나 애정 등과 같이 상징적이고 정서적이며 비물질적인 자원의 경우엔 어머니와 자녀 모두 형평한 교환보다는 상대편에게 유리한 방향으로 이타성 교환이 이루어질 때 자신들의 관계에 더 만족한다. 이는 한국의 어머니와 자녀 간 교환 원리로서 이타성이 작동하는 부분이다. 그런데 특이한 것은， 애정자원의 교환과 관계만조도간 연관성이다. 자녀는 자신이 어머니에게 제공하거나 기대하는 것보다 어머니로부터의 애정이 과하게 주어진다고 여길 때, 오히려 부담스러워하고 멀어지려는 경향을 보인다. 이는 어머니로부터 멀어지려는 자녀에겐 어머니의 과도한 애정표현이 오히려 관계를 훼손할 수 있으므로, 자녀와 보조를 맞추도록 하는 기술이 필요함을 시사한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study observes how the reciprocity between children and their mothers affects the relationship satisfaction. Reciprocity is conceptualized as giving and taking resources in dyadic relations, based on the exchange theory. The degree of equity and inequity can be calculated in exchanging resources, and the inequity diverges to two opposite directions - egoistic inequity and altruistic inequity. For estimating the effects of equity/inequity on the relationship satisfaction, this study utilizes the framework of resource theory. The data used in this study was collected by surveying 150 children and their mothers. It is observed that children are more satisfied with the relationship when material resources such as service/goods/money are more equitably exchanged, but that mothers' relationship satisfaction is not significantly related with the way of exchanging material resources. Both mothers and children prefer altruistically inequitable exchange of symbolic, emotional, and immaterial resources such as love and status. One interesting finding is that the children are dissatisfied with their mothers when they get maternal love more heavily than their own expression of love to their mothers. Today's mothers should remind themselves of the fact that the excessive expression of maternal love can ruin the relationship between parents and their children.
