Along with economic growth and increased leisure time, people have become very interested in culture and
arts in order to enjoy productive and satisfying leisure time, and started to consider creative and quality contents an important criterion for their selection.
The directing of the performing arts field is expanding from text-oriented to the expression of visual images. The area of performance is expanding with various contents, and also becoming a convergent performing arts that crosses the boundaries between genres with the expansion of digital media in the performing arts field and the emergence of new media.
This study defines the form of a performance that combines media art technology and art as a media art performance. Media art technology in performances provides audiences with strong communication opportunities as well as new experience values. However, the process of combining performance and media art technology shows some limitations. The first, the difference in understanding of the work arises between the stage staff of the performance and the video engineer. Second, media art elements arise that are difficult to combine based on the characteristics of the performance genre.
Specifically, the role of media art is different for different genres such as theater, musical, dance, and performance. In addition, the case of focusing only on the form of a performance fused with media art technology shows the limitation of the work structure. So, it is required to use media art to suit the genre characteristics of the performance for effective contents delivery in the process of convergence of performance and media art technology.
Therefore, this study suggest that it is necessary to analyze the difference of the influence of media art technology by type by classifying the type of performance by the characteristics of the performance genre, and present the following research topics.
Research question: How does the characteristics of media art affect the audience's intention to view depending on the type of performance by narrative function?
To deal with this research issue, we studied the theoretical background of performing arts, media arts, technology acceptance theory, and personal innovation, identified the characteristic variables of media art performances and designed a research model based on technology acceptance theory, and also used independent variables (interactivity, variety, narrativity, sensory stimulation), parameters (perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use), dependent variables (intention to revisit), control variables (performance type, personal innovativeness). For analysis, we surveyed audiences who watched media art performances and analyzed valid questionnaires of a total of 477 copies.
The results of the study show that the characteristic factors of a media art performance have a meaningful effect on the audience's intention to revisit. Also, among the characteristic factors of a media art performance, the narrativity and perceived usefulness have a positive relationship. The narrativity describes the development of the story along with the structure of characters, events, and backgrounds, and makes it easier to enjoy performances using media art and improves accessibility when making the audience feel that the story is flowing over time. It also means the improvement of productivity through the performances. Although media art performances consist of functions that maximize experience value with the use of various media that stimulate the senses of the audience, if stage directing is focused on the media, the audience may feel media art as a distraction. Therefore, a plan that can effectively approach the audience with a story centered on a narrative structure is required to use media art as a directing element.
There was a difference between the group who watched verbal performance and the group who watched non-verbal performance on the moderating effect on the type of performance. The sensory stimulation through media art performances had a significant effect on the usefulness of audiences' performance viewing in the type of viewing verbal performance. The performance characteristics of media art performances with well-equipped narratives improved ease and usefulness in the type of viewing non-verbal performance. This shows that the use of media art stimulates the senses of the audience and enhances the experiential value as the narrative function in the verbal performance field works higher than the non-verbal performance. In the non-verbal performance field, the narrative function works lower than the verbal performance, so a performance centered on a visual element with a narrative structure enhances the audience's value for viewing performances.
There is a difference between high and low innovative groups regarding the moderating effect of personal innovativeness. In a high-innovative group that accepts the new system faster, the usefulness of the performance has a great influence on the intention to revisit. And in terms of media art performance characteristics, narrativity has the greatest influence on the ease of performance. In the relationship between usefulness and influence, interactivity, variety, and sensory stimulation, excluding narrativity, have a positive effect. In the low innovative group that slowly accepts the new system, only the usefulness of the performance influenced the intention to revisit. Regarding the characteristic factors of media art performances, variety and sensory stimulation have a positive effect on usefulness, which mean that in the highly innovative group, the technical and dramatic elements of media art performances have a great influence on the audience's intention to watch, and on the other hand, in the low innovation group, the technical elements of media art performances have a great influence on the audience's intention to watch.
This study is an empirical study that statistically verifies the intention to revisit in relation to the acceptance factors of the audience who watched the media art performance. This study was conducted by dividing the performance types into verbal performance and non-verbal performance, and researching the acceptance of media art technology in performances based on the audience's development innovation for acceptance. We hope that, with this study, the media art technology considering the characteristics of the performance genre will be systematically established to provide a differentiated experience value to the audience and to enhance the viewing value of the work through understanding the factors of media art performances that influence the audience's intention to view.
