The iterative advancement of artificial intelligence technologies is profoundly reshaping the production logic and structural forms of the cultural content industry. As a core carrier of traditional Chinese aesthetics, Chinese painting is now encountering a historic transition from “museumization” to “digital activation.” From the dual perspectives of art theory and digital humanities, this paper systematically examines the multiple pathways through which artificial intelligence intervenes in the creation, dissemination, and industrial transformation of Chinese painting. The study finds that generative AI, through technologies such as generative adversarial networks (GANs) and diffusion models, not only empowers the innovation of creative tools in Chinese painting, but also gives rise to new forms of industry, including immersive interactive experiences, personalized cultural and creative product development, and digital collectible transactions. However, behind this technological empowerment lie profound challenges: the tension between algorithmic logic and the Eastern aesthetic ideal of qiyun shengdong (spiritual resonance and vitality), the ambiguity surrounding copyright ownership of AI-generated content, and the risk that “averaged aesthetics” may erode artistic originality. This paper argues that establishing a framework of human–machine symbiosis in both creative ethics and institutional regulation, while preserving the essential aesthetic identity of Chinese painting amid the surge of algorithmic technologies, is key to achieving its creative transformation and innovative development in the digital age.
