This study is to explore the correlation between parental raising attitude and career maturity perceived by technical high school students. The purpose is to provide guidance for developing parents education and career maturity enhancement progress to promote more efficient and open communication between parents and their children.
The research questions of this study were as follows.
1. To determine the differences in career maturity according to grades.
2. To determine the differences in career maturity according to genders.
3. To determine the differences in career maturity according to socio-economic status.
The subjects of this study were a total of 290 students selected by the stratified random sampling of 1st, 2nd and 3rd grades in Chungbuk technical high school located in Cheong-ju, and the collected data were processed using SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Science). The tools used in the study are the PARQ (Parental Acceptance Rejection Questionnaire developed by Rohner(1991) and used by Seol-hui Song and the Career Maturity Inventory developed by Crities(1978) and used by Ok-suk Kim(2001).
The result of this is as follows:
First, there were very few differences in career maturity according to grades. But there was a significant difference by parents' raising attitude. Acceptable raising group had higher career maturity than unacceptable raising group.
Second, by gender female students showed a significant difference. Acceptable raising group had higher career maturity than unacceptable raising group. In contrast, male students had few differences according to parents' raising attitude.
Third, there was a partly significant difference in career maturity by parents' socio-economic status. High levels (parents' socio-economic status) was few differences in career maturity. On the other hand low levels (parents' socio-economic status) had a significant difference in career maturity. Acceptable raising group is higher than unacceptable raising group in career maturity.
The above result emphasizes the necessity of good parents-children relationships, for which parents should try to have good raising attitude and various educational institutions should provide proper education for parents.
In addition, unlike general developmental theories, career maturity can be changed by external environmental factors and school education, thus technical high school also should provide career education in a systematic and consistent basis to enhance students' career maturity.
