This study aims to investigate the impact of Negative parenting attitudes on adolescents' academic helplessness and verify the moderating effect of grit in this relationship. To this end, a survey was conducted with 375 middle school students in the Busan and Gimhae regions, and the collected data were analyzed using SPSS and PROCESS Macro. The results indicated that Negative parenting attitudes significantly increased academic helplessness, acting as a major risk factor.
Conversely, grit showed a negative correlation with academic helplessness, and its moderating effect-buffering the adverse impact of negative parenting-was significantly verified. Specifically, adolescents with high levels of grit experienced less academic helplessness in negative parenting environments compared to those with lower grit. These findings suggest that grit, as an internal resource, is just as crucial as environmental factors in overcoming academic helplessness. Consequently, this study empirically highlights the necessity of implementing practical educational and counseling programs to enhance grit in school settings, alongside efforts to improve family environments, to prevent academic maladjustment.
