공간의 의미 부각과 현대성의 위기 : 체계이론의 공간 논의를 통한 고찰 = Emerging Sense of Space and the Crisis of Modernity

국문 초록 (Abstract)

그간 여러 사회이론들이 현대 사회를 탈공간적이라고 규정해왔다. 그중에서도 니클라스 루만의 체계이론은 가장 급진적인 탈공간적 혹은 비장소적 사회관을 견지해왔다. 하지만 의미의 사태 차원이나 사회적 차원으로 환원되지 않는 공간 차원의 독자성 관한 논의를 통해 최근에는 체계이론도 공간에 대한 관심을 높이기 시작했다. 배제의 원리와 멂과 가까움의 차이가 기능하는 의미의 공간 차원이 부각되는 것은 생태학적 차원에서는 위험한 장소와의 거리가 중요해지고, 사회적 차원에서는 미래가 없는 배제된 자들의 밀집지역이 확산되고 있기 때문이다. 즉, 생태학적 위험에 대한 커뮤니케이션이 증가하고, 현대 사회의 우선적 분화 형식인 기능적 분화를 침식하는 포함과 배제의 차이가 첨예해지기 때문이다. 이 두 가지 요인은 현대성의 위기를 함축하고 있다. 따라서 현대적 관점에 서 있는 관찰자에게 공간에 관한 사회학적 연구는 곧 현대 사회의 위기를 진단하고 비판하는 작업이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Several theories of society have mentioned de-spatiality of modern society. The concept of functionally differentiated society by Niklas Luhmann is likely to be the most de-spatial view of society. But in recent time, systems theorists take an interest in space. They argument the distiction of the spatial dimension of sense, which is not be reduced to the fact dimension or the social dimension of sense. In the spatial dimension, the principle of exclusion and the difference between far and near are functioning. The first factor of emerging sense of space is the increase of ecological communications, which pay attention to the distance from risky places. The second factor is the sharper difference between inclusion and exclusion, which is undermining the major form of modern society's differentiation, i.e. functional differentiation. These two factors implicate the crisis of modernity. Therefore, the sociological discussion of space is the diagnosis of modern society, and the observers who have modern perspective have to regard the discussion of space as the critique of society.
