The purpose of this study was to provide preliminary data in order to develop the Early Developmental Screening Device(EDSD) which can discriminate developmental levels of young children.
The EDSD was developed using the following procedures:
First, the protytype version of an EDSD was developed. This procedure was carried out through reviewing research literature on measurement and evaluation area for young children. The protytype version of EDSD was revised based on the recommendations of several professionals, including professors of early childhood education, directors of child care centers, and teachers at child care centers. Second, developmental tendencies of the subject children through the prototype version were examined. Third, item analysis(item difficulty, item discrimination), test reliability and test validity were analyzed.
95 young children(2 to 3 year old) were selected as subjects from 5 kindergartens and child care centers in Pusan area. They had been tested by this EDSD and the Denver Developmental Screening Test(DDST). This test analyzed the following six characteristics: perception-memory action, concept formation, language comprehension, language expression, fine motor and gross motor coordination. A questionnaire for parents provided supplementary data.
As for the major statistical methods of data analysis, one-way ANOVA, item analysis, Cronbach's α for reliability and correlation coefficient for validity were used.
