The present study aims to find out the status of children using the Dream Start programs and their satisfaction and further to investigate the differences in satisfaction levels depending on sociodemographic features and the status of using Dream Start. Study subjects were 120 children in elementary 3rd~6th grades using a Dream Start Center located in Susung-gu Daegu. A questionnaire survey was conducted with the subjects from March 16 to April 11, 2011. Data collected were analyzed using SPSS for Windows 19.0 program, specifically for frequency analyses, percentages, Cronbach's α coefficients, independent sample t-test and one-way ANOVA followed by Scheffe post-hoc test.
The analyses found the following points.
First, subjects consisted of boys(47.5%) and girls(52.5%), and lower graders(40.8%) and higher graders(50%). That is, distribution of gender and grade level was nearly even. 65% of children lived with their parents, and 74.2% of them were found to live in houses not owned by their families. 81.6% of children responded that their family circumstances were below average. In terms of parents' jobs, sales service jobs accounted for 98.3%, which was higher than any other job group by 30.4%.
Second, 55.8% of children had been using the Dream Start Center for 1 ~ 2 years, and 82.5% of them were using the center 3~4 times. 66.7% of children responded they used the center for less than 3~4 hours. As for reasons to use the center, the largest percentage(45.8%) of children were found to use it at the request of their parents. Cognitive/linguistic area was found to be most frequently used by 54.2% of the children studied here.
Third, Dream Start was 3.86, higher than average. Children's rights showed the highest level(4.45), followed by human network(3.75), program(3.63) and physical environment(3.59).
Fourth, gender led to significant differences in physical environment and human network, while grade levels were related to significant differences in human network and program. Girls rather than boys and lower graders rather than higher ones showed higher levels of satisfaction. Depending on family types, residence types and parents' employment types, significant differences were found in physical environment, human network, program and children's rights. Levels of satisfaction were higher among children from single-parent families, living in permanent rental apartments or houses, with parents engaging in simple labor, skill-related works and sales service.
Fifth, depending on duration, frequency and daily hours of children's using the center, significant differences were found in physical environment, human network, program and children's rights. Higher levels of satisfaction were found among children who had been using the center for 1~2 years and 4~5 times weekly and who tended to stay longer daily in the center.
Based on the aforementioned findings, the present study suggests the following.
First, PR campaigns need be waged on functions and roles of the Dream Start in local communities.
Second, personalized learning programs need be supported in accordance with children's learning abilities.
Third, to improve accessibility to Dream Start Centers, at least one Dream Start Center need be founded in each district nationwide.
Fourth, specialized protection of children need be strengthened as part of the functions provided by Dream Start Centers. Teachers and other staffs in Dream Start Centers should make efforts to provide children with human and material supports and interactions that their parents cannot give. Particularly, considering Dream Start teachers can play big roles in meeting psychological and emotional needs of children from low-income families, expertise of teachers and sufficient human resources must be secured.
Fifth, continuous and diverse programs need be provided for children. A range of field trips for learning and cultural and leisure activities need be offered to children who cannot afford such opportunities due to poverty and unfavorable family circumstances. To provide and extend programs, diverse local resources should be used as part of integrated services as well as direct services provided by Dream Start Centers.
