O'Neill's Mourning Becomes Electra consists two important elements; that is, the theme of death and "Blessed Isles." They are woven into the play in all kinds of ways. For example, the recurring crimson sky, the black-white contrast of Mannon's temple, the human relationship based on Freudianism its recurrent incest-motif, they all have something to do with death. They contrast with the south Sea Islands, which represent "relase, peace, recurity, freedom of conscience, sinlessness, longing for the primitive, the mother symbol and the yearning for prenatal non-competitive freedom from fear."
But this dream of "Blessed Isles" fails to come about. Ezra becomes aware of the significance of love and life, but only after he has known the comradeship of other on the battlefield and has seen death. He wants to go to the South Sea Islands with Christine and start a new life. But he can't achieve this end because of Christine's hatred and his own death. Christine and Adam Brant want to live on the South Sea Islands alone, Hazel and Peter want to marry Orin and Lavinia, and they all fail to achieve the realization of their dreams concerning the South Sea Islands.
Especially after Christine's suicide, the spirit of vindictiveness and death in the Mannons seems to be temporarily satisfied, and Lavinia can come to life. Like her father, not until she had experienced death and does she actually become aware of the meaning of life. Therefore, Lavinia and Orin take a trip together on order to find their "Blessed Isles," stopping at the South Sea Islands. There, Orin realizes that these are not his Islands, and he rejects this ideal paradise to return to his home. And Lavinia, who returns with him realizes this her dream of escape has been only an illusion and that she must face the ghosts of her past and accept her punishment for the evil she has done.
Like this, the power in the Mannons' dead is so strong that their dream at "Blessed Isles" cannot be realized. They cannot control this curse and tradition, so they ultimately become victims of destiny. Therefore, Mourning Becomes Electra became a total Inferno.
