스티븐 차르녹(Stephen Charnock, 1628-1680)의 신적 전능과 주권에 대한 이해 ―지성사(intellectual history)적 고찰을 중심으로

The doctrine of divine power and sovereignty is the important subject as the core of the Reformed theology since the Reformation. In the history of Christian doctrine, it has been the theological subject especially related to the meaning of the voluntas Dei. In this thesis, we investigated the relationship between the Reformed orthodox theology and late medieval thought in their ideas of the power and sovereignty of God in its intellectual context. This study would also help to understand Calvin's idea of the sovereignty and the power of God more enrichingly. Especially we have seen, through the investigation of their works, that William Perkins and Stephen Charnock, the two representative figures of later Reformed theology after Calvin, had firmly inherited the trinitarian doctrine of God and soteriology based upon the Calvinistic tradition.
Charnock and Perkins were also the two great theologians of the English Puritanism. They substantiated the Puritan doctrine of God in terms of the theology and piety, theory and practice, and the divine sovereignty and human responsibility in order to defend the Triunity of God and the divine simplicity, which are the crucial foundation of traditional orthodox theology. The knowledge of God was the key subject in this effort. The content of the Reformed doctrine of God from Perkins to Charnock was de facto the continuous one. Nevertheless, Charnock's idea of the sovereignty and power of God was the result of the pursuit of more solid trinitarian or covenantal theological system, regardless of the formal or structural development due to the change of the historical or intellectual context.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

하나님의 능력과 주권교리는 종교개혁전통, 특히 개혁주의 전통에 있어 핵심적 표어로 제시되고 있는 커다란 주제이자 사상적 틀이다. 이는 하나님의 뜻 혹은 의지란 무엇인가에 대한 해석과 맞물려 교리사적으로 그동안 논의가 되었다. 본 논문에서는 개혁주의 신학과 중세 혹은 중세후기적 연관성 및 칼빈 이후의 개혁파 정통주의의 견해를 함께 파악해보는 것이 역사적 맥락 속에서 정통신학의 계승과 연속성을 이해하는 데 도움이 될 것이며 종교개혁자 칼빈을 중심으로 이해되고 있는 하나님의 주권교리의 의미가 과연 무엇인가에 대한 보다 풍성한 논의에도 유익을 줄 것이라는 사실을 시사하고자 했다. 특히 칼빈 이후 개혁주의전통의 삼위일체적 신론 및 구원론의 계승의 차원에서의 대표적 인물인 초기 정통주의의 윌리엄 퍼킨스와 전성기 정통주의의 스티븐 차르녹의 하나님의 능력과 주권교리를 살펴봄을 통해 우리는 이를 확인했다.
아울러 차르녹과 퍼킨스는 영국 청교도 전통 하에서 신론을 정립한 대표적 인물들로서도 신학과 경건 및 이론과 실천, 하나님의 주권 및 능력과 인간의 책임을 삼위일체와 하나님의 단순성 교리라는 양보할 수 없는 정통신학의 전제 하에서 하나님을 아는 지식이라는 통합적 주제로서 성공적으로 변호했음을 보았다. 한편 하나님의 전능과 주권론에 있어 퍼킨스에서 차르녹의 발전과 변천에 있어서는 역사적 맥락의 변화로 인한 논의 구조의 세밀화와 복잡화 및 확대를 볼 수 있었다. 그러나 개혁주의 신론의 내용상 본질은 변함이 없었으며, 특히 차르녹의 하나님의 전능 및 주권론, 즉 나아가 그의 하나님의 속성에 관한 논의는 초기 정통신학에서 후기 정통주의기 신학으로 나아가는 신학 장르적 발전이자 내용적 풍성함을 더욱 보여주는 대표적 증거였다. 아울러 이는 중세후기 신학 및 종교개혁의 개혁주의전통을 주로 연속선상에서 목회적 및 경건의 실제적 유익을 위해 총괄적으로 결합시킨 개혁주의 신학의 절정이라는 결론을 내렸다.
