월산의 생애 고찰

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 고찰은 현대기 조계종단사의 주역으로 불국사의 현대사를 이끌었던 고승인 월 산대종사의 생애를 역사적인 관점에서 정리한 글이다. 지금껏 월산에 대한 학술적인 접근 및 연구는 매우 미약하였다. 다만, 최근(2019.12) 대각사상연구원에서 그의 생애 를 주제로 학술 세미나를 개최한 성과물이 나와 있기에 그를 참고하였다. 그러나 아 직도 그의 생애를 알려주는 문헌, 증언 등은 매우 부족하다. 그래서 이 글에서는 필 자가 찾은 객관적인 근거에 의거하여 그의 전 생애를 조명하고자 하였다. 이런 입론에서 필자는 그의 생애를 몇 단계로 구분하여, 각 시기별의 그의 삶의 특성을 밝히고자 하였다. 첫째, 그의 입산, 출가 이후의 수행기(1943∼1954)를 조명하였다. 둘째, 그의 종단 활동(1954∼1974)을 조명하였다. 이 기간에서는 식민지 불교의 모 순을 극복하려는 불교정화운동에 대한 주제와 총무원장 시절의 지성을 중점적으로 다루었다. 셋째, 불국사의 주지로 근무하면서 불국사의 역사와 문화를 증대시켰던 활동(1974 ∼1986)을 다루었다. 넷째, 그의 불교사상인 중도사상에 의거하여 그의 제자, 경주 지역의 신도, 많은 대중들을 지도하였던 그의 마지막 삶(1986∼1997)의 내용을 다루었다. 이상과 같은 내용을 다룬 본 고찰이 월산의 생애와 사상, 현대기의 불국사, 조계종 단의 주역 연구 등에 참고가 되길 기대한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This review is based on the historical perspective of the life of Monk Wolsan, who led the modern history of Bulguksa Temple and the main character of Jogye Order. Until now, academic approaches and research on Wolsan have been very weak. However, he was recently referred to the results of holding an academic seminar on the theme of his life at the Diagonal Institute of Thought (2019.12). However, the literature and testimony of his life are still lacking. Therefore, this article tried to shed light on his entire life based on the objective evidence that I found. In this introduction, I wanted to distinguish his life into several stages and reveal the characteristics of his life at each time. First, his attendance period (1943∼1954) after entering the country and leaving the country was illuminated. Second, it sheds light on his longitudinal activities (1954∼1974). During this period, the theme of the Buddhist purification movement to overcome the contradictions of colonial Buddhism and the intellect of the General Affairs Commissioner's days were highlighted. Third, it dealt with the activities (1974∼ 1986), which increased the history and culture of Bulguksa Temple while serving as the main location of Bulguksa Temple. Fourth, it covered his last life(1986∼ 1997) which led his disciples, believers in Gyeongju, and many people according to his Buddhist thought, the middle thought. We hope that this review, which deals with the above, will be a reference to the life and ideas of Wolsan, Bulguksa Temple in the modern era, and the study of the leaders of the Jogye Order.
