Liposomes have been widely employed as biomemtrane-mimetic system and drug delivery system. The effects of various drugs on the fluidity of liposomes were investigated. In this study, the effects of Ixeris sonchifolia H.(IS) which is used for food material on the fluidity of dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine(DPPC) liposome were measured with differential scanning calorimetry(DSC).
The thermograms of the DPPC liposomal bilayers incorporated with the Ixeris sonchifolia H. were obtained, and the enthalpy changes and the sizes of cooperative unit of the transition were calcurated. The results showed that incorporation of the Ixeris sonchifolia H. into the liposomal bilayers effectively reduced the transition temperature at which the transition from gel state to liquid-crystalline state occurs, broadened the thermogram peaks, and reduced the ratio of Van't Hoff to calorimetric enthalpies. These results indicate that the Ixeris sonchifolia H. might have significant effects on the fluidity of biological membranes.
