Kuk Sool is the total martial art that is comprised of hand strikes and kick technique, smash technique, bow technique, folding fan-fist technique, long staff technique, sword technique, the walking cane technique. By his youth, In Hyuk Suh had traveled to hundreds of Buddhist temples and private martial arts teachers, studying many techniques of Korean martial arts. In Hyuk Suh began to integrate the many scattered martial art techniques of Korea into a single martial art, Kuk Sool. Suh officially founded Kuk Sool by 1958. The three branches of traditional Korean martial arts which comprise the basis of Kuk Sool are firstly, Sah Doh Mu Sool (Tribal or Family martial Arts) which was mainly passed down from one generation to the next in a warrior or a noble family, secondly, Bool Kyo Mu Sool (Buddhist Temple Martial Arts) which has been practiced and passed down by Buddhist monks, and lastly, Koong Joong Mu Sool (Royal Court Martial Arts) which passed down as the form of martial art to defend their country or to train the guard members of the Korean Royal court. We can find the description for long staff technique and sword technique of Koong Joong Mu Sool (Royal Court Martial Arts) in the history of Kuk Sool Won. For example, long staff technique or sword technique were influenced by Muyedobotongji(an illustrated manual of Korean martial arts) but their system of thought have modified to fit with the usage of long staff technique and sword technique. From this fact, we draw out that Ryu(stream), Won(circle), Hwa(harmony) which are intrinsic elements of Kuk Sool are applied as the technique which is practice with not bare hand but weapons.
We found that thought of Kuk Sool is a system which makes to acquire Ryu(流,stream), Won(圓,circle), Hwa(和,harmony) through Ryu(stream) which is meant what not oppose other’s will, and Won(circle) is his own area which need perfection, Hwa(harmony) which is in harmony with other in his own area. Such the scent of Jeong(情,familiarity) and Rye(禮,etiquette) which can smell from the practiced are the driving force of success on Kuk Sool in the world. Generally speaking, the practiced is good at a system of thought on Ryu(stream), Won(circle), Hwa(harmony).
In this study, we fount that there are for close relations between thoughts and techniques of Kuk Sool from the study on primary grade style, intermediate grade style, high level style, up to the highest level style.
