This paper examines the shifts in discussions on sentence types during the early period of Modern Korean linguistics, identifying the independent theoretical foundations of speech act studies within the field.
During the Japanese colonial period, authorized textbooks temporarily excluded declarative and interrogative sentences from sentence classification. Regarding propositive and imperative sentences, scholarly views contrasted significantly; Park Seung-bin (1935) regarded propositives as an imperative subtype, whereas Choe Hyeon-bae (1937) established them as a distinctly independent category.
Furthermore, Kim Gyu-sik (1912) and Jeong Ryeol-mo (1946) argued against classifying exclamatives independently, noting that emotional expression and monologic contexts do not clearly distinguish them. Similarly, Choe (1937) categorized exclamatives under declaratives. Finally, the theoretical distinction between sentence types and speech acts initially emerged in Choe (1937) and was further developed by Kim Yun-gyeong (1948). These works introduced foundational discussions on indirect speech acts associated with propositive, imperative, and interrogative sentences, as well as echo questions, demonstrating early advancements in Korean linguistic scholarship.
