‘모던modern’의 한국적 개념화에 대한 탐색적 연구: ‘근대近代’에 관한 『조선왕조실록』의 언어적 용례를 중심으로 = An Exploratory Study of the Conceptualization of ‘The Modern’ in the Korean Context: Focused on the Linguistic Usages of ‘근대(近代, Geundae)’ in the Annals of Chosun Dynasty

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Modernity has its conceptual history. Its early history goes back to the period before the rise of the social sciences. Historically speaking, it is a long tradition in the West that pursues the intellectual interests in interpreting the meaning of the word, ‘the modern’. This paper, first, summarizes this conceptual history.
With this introduction, the purpose of this paper is to investigate the historical records of ‘근대(近代, Geundae)’ and its related terminologies, which have been used as the translation of ‘the modern’, in the classical texts in Korean intellectual history. This paper chooses the Annals of Chosun Dynasty as the object of this investigation. This text, the Annals of Chosun Dynasty, provides a clue for identifying the historical consciousness of the politico-administrative class of Chosun which had been lasted more than five hundred years. With the terminologies, ‘근(近, Geun)/금(今, Geum)’, they recognize the problematique of their period and resolve the critical agendas. Additionally, ‘‘고(古, Goh)’ supports this linguistic function. With the observation of the linguistic usages in the Annals of Chosun Dynasty, it is identified that the administrative-political class in the Chosun period culturally had ‘serious attitudes’ and made sincere efforts to solve the problematique of their period.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

모더니티modernity는 개념의 역사를 갖고 있다. 이 역사는 19세기의 사회과학의 발전 이전까지 거슬러 올라간다. 역사적으로 서구에서 ‘모던modern’이라는 단어에 대한 지성사적 관심은 그 자체로 오랜 전통이었다. 이 글은 우선 이 개념 연구의 역사를 요약적으로 소개한다. 이 요약을 바탕으로 ‘모던modern’의 번역어로서 사용되어온 ‘근대近代’와 관련 용어들의 문헌적 기록을 한국의 고전 문헌에서 찾고, 해석적으로 이해하는 것이 이 글의 목적이다. 이 논문은 『조선왕조실록』을 분석의 대상으로 선택한다. 이 문헌은 500년 이상 지속된 조선의 행정계급(왕, 관료, 사대부 등)의 역사인식을 살펴볼 단초를 제공한다. 조선의 행정계급에게 ‘근近/금今’은 당대의 문제를 인식하고, 그 문제를 해결하는데 필요한 언어적 기능을 수행하였다. 이 기능은 추가적으로 ‘고古’개념의 활용과 더불어 진행되었다. 이러한 관찰을 바탕으로, 조선시대의 행정계급이 문화적으로 갖고 있었던 ‘당대’에 대한 진지한 문제의식과 해결노력의 흔적을 확인할 수 있었다.
