세대 개념의 과잉, 세대연구의 빈곤 = 세대연구 방법에 대한 고찰

국문 초록 (Abstract)

세대에 대한 일반적 관심이 높아지는 가운데, 이에 대한 학술적 연구 역시 왕성하게 진행되고 있다. 연구의 양적인 성장에도 불구하고, 세대연구 방법의 ‘빈곤 상황’은 개선되지 않고 있다. 그 이유는 무엇보다 세대연구의 중요사안에 대한 합의의 부족을 들 수 있다. 특히 세대가 형성되는 과정에 대한 논의는 상호대립적인 관점들, 즉 세대(집단)를 조건이 조성되면 자동적으로 만들어지는 것으로 보는 관점(객관적인 조건)과, 반대로 세대(의식)의 발명 후에 세대성원들이 집결하게 된다는 입장(주관적인 계기)의 소모적인 논쟁으로 점철되어 있는 상황이다. 이 연구는 세대형성 과정을 객관적 조건과 주관적인 계기의 통일체로 간주하면서, 상호대립적인 관점의 통합을 모색한다. 이를 위해 이 연구는 부르디외(Bourdieu)의 계급이론과 아비투스 개념, 그리고 만하임(Mannheim)의 “세대결속적 경험”의 개념에 주목한다. 이를 세대이론에 접목하여 세대형성의 조건과 계기를 통합할 수 있는 토대를 마련하는 것, 바로 이것이 이 글의 목적이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Issues regarding generation are facing a renaissance during recent years. However, it is often criticized that the academical examination of this topic is rather in a poor stage resulting from the underdevelopment of the generation research methodology. The underdevelopment of the generation research methodology results first of all from the fact that generation researchers do not reach consensus on the key issues of generation study. Above all the explanation for the processes of generation formation are divided by two opposing approaches: one side objective generation position insists a generation is appeared automatically if objective conditions are met; the other side subjective generation approach claims in a generation formation generation consciousness plays a key role. This one-sidedness of two positions, so this study asserts, is not conductive to understanding of the process of generation formation. This study claims this methodological problems are solved by introducing of Bourdieus’s theoretical conceptions (especially the concept habitus) into the generation discussion.
